This is a really important recipe in my family. We make these zesty sausage squares for almost every holiday. This dish is perfect for any occasion, especially when you are low on time. It's a quick but delicious recipe. You can have these for a snack, appetizer, or even as a main dish. In all, this dish takes about 30 minutes to make. This spicy treat will make you the talk of the town.

Supplies

What you will need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Bisquick baking mix
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 4 TBSP mayonnaise (any brand)
  • 1 pound hot sausage (any brand, Bob Evans if possible)
  • 1/2 cup onions, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 2 (4 ounce cans) green chilies, chopped

Other supplies:

  • Crisco/any cooking oil (for greasing pan)
  • Paper towels (to drain ingredients)

Prepare Ingredients

To start off you should gather all of your ingredients and other supplies you will need to make this dish. After you have gathered your ingredients you should go ahead and measure them out. Go ahead and grease your casserole dish with any type of cooking grease. Make sure it is well coated so the Bisquick doesn't stick to the bottom. Also preheat your oven at 375 degrees.

Tip, If you measure your ingredients before you start cooking that will save you a lot of time in the long run.

Create Your Batter

To create your batter you need to combine your Bisquick, milk and 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise into a small bowl. Then combine those ingredients with a spatula making sure everything is combined. You will know it is all mixed when there is no more Bisquick powder and everything is smooth. It should be a dough like consistency and it shouldn't stick to your hands.

Frying Time

Next you will need to take care of your sausage and chopped onions. First, set your stove top to medium heat and set your pan over the burner. Next, put your sausage and onions into the pan together and let that cook for 15 minutes. You know that everything is cooked when the sausage isn't pink and the onions turn translucent. When done drain on paper towel to get rid of all of the oil.

Top Layer

Take your egg, remaining 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, and green chilies and put them in a bowl. Mix until well incorporated. You know it is all mixed together when the egg is well beaten. Set this mixture aside until assembly.

Assembly and Cooking

First, spread all of your Bisquick mixture in the bottom of the greased pan. Next, layer all of your drained sausage and onions over the Bisquick mixture, making sure it is spread out evenly. Lastly, spread your egg and cheese mixture over your layer of sausage and onions, evenly. After it is all assembled put the dish in your preheated oven and cook for 25 minutes.

Enjoy!
