Wine Purse

Have you ever received an invitation to a backyard BBQ and wanted to bring some wine? This a cute way to walk around and dispense it.

Make this bag using an empty plastic container from a box of wine.

I like Franzia Chardonnay but any kind of wine will work in this bag.

I had about a yard of this lovely purple batik cotton fabric that I used to make the bag.

For this project, you will need the following:

Fabric for bag and fabric for lining- about 3/4 yard for each

18" x 22" of fleece

scissors

thread

14" zipper

Straight pins

measuring tape

4" square and 3" x 14" rectangle of plastic canvas

4" piece of Velcro

4 metal rings for the handles

Empty bag from box of wine, washed and rinsed

2 medium binder clips

Cut a piece of print cotton fabric 18" x 22".

Cut a piece of solid color cotton fabric for lining 18" x 22".

Cut a piece of fleece for insulation 18" x 22".

Pin the 3 layers together, lining, fleece and print fabric.

Place this on a table in front of you with the 18" at the top and bottom, the sides measuring 22" long.

Cut out a 1-1/2" circle from a piece of paper. pin the circle 3" from the right side and 6" from the top edge.

Pin all 3 layers together about 1" around the paper circle.

Cut through all 3 layers around the paper circle.

Remove pins.

Take the fleece out of the middle and set aside.

Place the print fabric on the table, right side up. Place the lining on top, matching up the holes. Pin.

Sew around the circle 1/4" from the edge. Clip the curves. Turn the lining to the inside, through the hole.

Sew a 3-1/2" strip of Velcro (the loop side) 1/2" beneath the hole, but just to the print fabric, not the lining.

Take the 18" x 22" fleece and cut the hole 1/4" larger so the hole is now 2" in diameter.

Bring up the 4 corners of the print fabric and feed them through the hole in the fleece.

Cut out 2 plastic canvas 4" circles with a 2" hole in the center.

Place one on top of the other and, using a needle and thread, sew them together.

Turn the layers over so the lining is facing up. bring all 4 corners up and feed them through the hole in the plastic canvas circle. Smooth the fabric down and pin all 3 layers together. Pin around plastic canvas.
Using the zipper foot, sew around the plastic canvas.

Cut 2 squares that are 4-1/2".

Pin them right sides together, sew around 3 sides.

Clip corners.

Turn right side out. Turn the open edges to the inside 1/2" and pin.

Top stitch around all 4 sides.

Sew Velcro onto one end of the flap.

Sew the flap onto the bag just above the hole, matching up the other side of Velcro.

Fold up the print fabric and the fleece, leaving the lining down. Pin both sides.

Turn this over and fold the lining in half and pin the sides.

Stitch up both sides of the print fabric/fleece with 1/2" seam allowance.

Sew up both sides of the lining, 1/2" seam allowance.

To make the box corners, place your hand inside the lining section and open the seam allowance and press it against the bottom fold. Pin. Sew across, perpendicular to the side seam, 1-1/2" above the corner. Repeat for other side of lining section.

Sew the flat box corners for the print fabric/fleece section.

Cut a piece of plastic canvas 14" x 2-3/4"

Cover with lining fabric leaving 1" on each end.

Sew the ends to the seam allowance at the corners of the lining.

This will add a bit of stability to the bottom of the bag.

Turn the print fabric to the outside, tucking the lining inside.

Cut 3 pieces of purse fabric 4" x 22". Cut 3 pieces of lining fabric 4" x 20". Fold each in half lengthwise and press.

Sew down long side of handles 1/4" from each edge. Sew a row of stitches on opposite side of handles. Sew a row of stitches down the center of each handle.

Take one of the strips and cut it into 4 equal pieces. These are the loops that handles will be attached to.

Sew metal rings to both ends of each handle.

Take one of the smaller pieces and place it through one of the metal rings. Pin ends together and repeat with the remaining pieces. Sew the ends of the small pieces together.

Cut 2 pieces of fabric 4" x 14" out of purse fabric. Cut 2 pieces 4" x 14" out of lining fabric.

Place the lining fabric on top of print fabric.

Fold in half lengthwise with print fabric on the inside. Sew both ends of each piece.

Turn right side out. Sew a row of stitches on the raw edge.

Place the folded edge on the zipper tape and pin. Using the zipper foot, sew fabric to zipper.

Turn under the top edge of purse 1". Pin.

Turn under the top edge of lining 1". Pin.

Match up the side seams and pin.

Place the fabric strip next to the zipper in between the bag and lining. Pin.

Place the handle ends between the zipper and bag on both sides of the zipper. (about 1") Pin in place.

Sew around the top edge, reinforcing at the handles.

There you have it, a bag for your wine.

You can just pour some wine into the open corner of the bag and roll up the excess and secure with binder clips.

There's even room for a couple of collapsible cups!
