Wheelchair Folding Table
In contemporary society, the concept of disability is multifaceted, encompassing a wide range of conditions, impairments, and experiences. Understanding disability requires a nuanced exploration of not only its medical dimensions but also its social, cultural, and political implications. At its core, disability can be defined as a limitation or impairment that affects a person's ability to engage in typical activities or interact with their environment. In this particular case, the project will focus on a person with reduced mobility, this type of disability is characterized by temporary or permanent limitation of movement due to factors such as age, physical, motor or intellectual disability. The user of the product of this project is dependent on a wheelchair; however, the technical help that she currently has does not ensure her integrity and comfort, which is why it was decided to create a folding table so that the user can carry out her daily activities.
Supplies
- 3D Printer
- PLA Filament
- 3 cm plywood
- Aluminium tube
- Bearings
Measurements
Measurements of the wheelchair were taken to determine the size that the mechanism should have to be attached to the side tube of the wheelchair. We found that the diameter of the tube where we would attach the mechanism is 1 inch.
Design of the Clamps to Fix the Mechanism
With the help of design software, we began to design the clamps that will fix the mechanism to the wheelchair, taking into account the 1-inch diameter of the side tube where this system will be installed.
Design the Mechanism That Will Allow the Table to Be Folded to the Wheelchair.
For the operation of the mechanism, we manufacture three different pieces. The first one is the base of the mechanism, which is connected to the aluminum tube. The second one is used to connect the table with the mechanism, and finally, we have the internal piece, which is a bearing and it provides the movement that the mechanism performs together.
Print the Parts in PLA
The parts were printed on 3D printers using PLA filament and assembled.
Testing Impressions With a Metal Tube
The impressions were assembled and tests were done with the tube that will be placed in the wheelchair.
Making a Plywood Table
We made a wooden table measuring 35 x 45 cm and 3 cm wide. The wood received a paint and enamel treatment to improve the surface.
Final Assembly
Finally, all the parts of the project were assembled.
