Week 1: Laser Cutting

I laser cut an adapted version of the demo instructions, where I used Voronoi cells instead of Delunay Edge Generation to laser cut this pattern in cardboard.

Supplies

  • Grasshopper
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Laser Cutter
  • Cardboard

Grasshopper Voronoi

Instead of using a Delunay Curve generator, I divided the generated points into cells using Grasshopper's 2D Voroni Block, as pictured. I had to go through some troubleshooting to convert the cells to curves I could laser cut. I did this by adding an explode block that fed into the Offset Curve function (thank you Prof. Jacobs for your help). This explode block took my cells and created a list of points.

I used the union function in Illustrator to get rid of overlapping lines and produce something that I can cut.

I laser cut my pattern in Cardboard, I used 50% power and 50% speed, but it required 2 passes with the laser cutter to cut all the way through.
