In this woodworking video I'll be showing how to make a DIY walnut live edge console table with hairpin legs! I sourced a live edge walnut slab from Kettle Moraine Hardwoods (https://www.kmhardwoods.com/) then debarked it with a chisel and cut it to size with my DeWalt table saw and miter saw. I filled knots and holes with Starbond CA glue. Then I milled the boards with my DeWalt DW735 planer and sanded the walnut slab with my Ridgid belt sander and orbital sander.

I added hairpin legs using threaded wood inserts and panhead screws. Finally, I finished the table with Mr Cornwall's Super Duper Everlasting Oil.

Main Features

-Live edge walnut slab (faces and one edge already milled)

-Hairpin legs

-Threaded inserts

Supplies

-Live edge walnut slab

-Black CA glue (https://amzn.to/3b0LRh6)

-Medium clear CA glue (https://amzn.to/3C3IIZP)

-Hairpin legs (https://amzn.to/3vvCzTG)

-10-24 Threaded wood inserts and screws

-Mr Cornwalls super duper everlasting oil

Debarking

Use a sharp chisel or a draw shave debarking tool to remove most of the bark. Next remove the rest and shape the live edge to your liking with a belt sander. Follow up with an orbital sander with 80 grit.

Filling and Stabilizing Knots With CA Glue

Small knots can be filled with black CA glue if you choose and larger knots SHOULD be stabilized with CA glue. For the larger knots a thinner glue will allow it to penetrate deep into the knot. Use accelerator and let dry. Then sand with 80 grit sand paper in a orbital sander.

Cutting to Size

Cut the slab to the final width on the table saw and final length on the miter saw.

Milling Slab With DW735 Planer

If you have a planer, it is a good idea to clean up the slab and also take it to the final width you've chosen for you table.

Sand, Sand, Sand..

Now sand the entire slab with an orbital sander. Work your way from 80-180 grit. Be sure to not skip over grits and sand for a sufficient amount of time to reduce the risk or swirl marks.

Water Pop

Now, water pop the slab. Basically spray the slab with water and let it dry. This will allow the grain to "stand up" so you can sand it off in the next step. This will keep the table feeling smoother longer.

More Sanding

Now finish sanding the entire slab with 240 and 400 grit sandpaper in the orbital sander.

Apply Finish

Now, apply the super duper everlasting oil using the supplied applicator. A little oil goes a long way. Apply the oil and let sit for 20 min. Then wipe off the excess oil. Wait 24 hours and apply the next coat in the same way. Apply a total of at least 3 coats. After the final coat, buff with a clean cloth.

Install Hairpin Legs/final Coat of Finish

Now, position the hairpin legs where you want them and mark the hole locations. Put masking tape on the drill bit to mark the depth so you don't drill through the top. Now drill all the holes, thread in the threaded inserts and then install the legs.

Apply the final coat of oil in the same fashion as earlier. Let the table sit for at least 24 hours before using.

Enjoy saving HUGE money on your live edge console table!!
