Hi Instructables! I am so glad that my first furniture makeover tutorial that I posted here was featured. With that, I am happy and excited to share again a gorgeous dresser painted in velvet blue with stunning gold details.

Supplies

These are the supplies I used for the Blue and Gold Dresser Makeover

  • Missions Thrift Store Dresser
  • Paint Brushes
  • Shop Towel
  • Bond Glue
  • TSP Substitute
  • Orbital Sander
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack Cloth
  • Water Mister
  • Woodubend Trim
  • BOSS Gray Primer
  • Antebellum Chalk Mineral Paint
  • In The Navy Chalk Mineral Paint
  • Gemstone Mousse Amber
  • Satin Clear Coat

Prep

I began by removing all the hardware and then giving it a thorough clean inside and out using a TSP substitute.

Repair and Sand

I used a putty knife to remove what remained of the damaged trim on the front oval, then sanded the entire dresser. I used a new trim set to replace the old one and glued them. I like this trim because they are bendable and easy to attach.

Prime and Paint

When painting a dark color, a tinted primer comes in handy because it reduces the number of layers required for complete coverage. A primer is also very necessary in pieces like this because they tend to show discoloration and bleed through.

Once the primer dried, it only took one coat of dark navy blue chalk paint to have full coverage.

Paint Wash

To give the finish a distressed look, I gave it a light sanding first and then paint wash it with dark teal chalk paint.

To do the paint wash, I brushed the paint and then pat it away with a towel.

Gold Details

To add metallic and gold sparkle to the details of the piece, I used a gilding wax in amber color. The copper-gold color matches perfectly with the dresser's velvet blue color.

I also used the same gilding wax to glow up the old hardware.

Finished Look
