DIY Upcycle Table Using Wrapping Paper

First of all watch the video to familiarise yourself with the process.

Paint the Table

Start by painting your table using furniture paint, I find this best to work with as it's fast drying and no sanding is required, paint the whole table other than the top. If the piece of furniture you're working on is quite rough and would look better if sanded down, please do this prior to painting.

Cut Your Wrapping Paper to Size

Once the paint has dried, cut your wrapping paper to size, I used this: https://ohhdeer.com/midnight-jungle-giftwrap this is 90GSM paper (GSM is the thickness of the paper). I would recommend using at least 90GSM as it's quite thick, lower GSM paper can tear more easily when wet. Which will be in the next step.

Preparing to Stick the Wrapping Paper to the Table Top

Mix a solution of 2 parts glue and 1 part water. You can use PVA glue or modge podge, I used PVA. Pour a layer of this mixture onto the table top where the wrapping will be going, and spread out with a paintbrush. Working quickly, you will then need to wet the wrapping paper. I poured a bit of water at a time and just spread it out with my hands, do this to the front and the back of the paper.

You're now ready to place the wrapping paper on the table top where the glue and water mixture is. You will need to be patient and careful at this stage as you will need to be mindful that you don't tear the paper. Keep lifting and placing the paper down until you are happy with the placement. Then carefully smooth out any areas with air bubbles or wrinkles.

Once you're happy with the placement brush on another coating of the glue and water mixture onto the top of the wrapping paper. Leave until completely dry.

Finalising the Table

The final stage is optional but good to do if you plan on placing drinks or similar on your table. Coat the table top with furniture wax, follow the instructions on the product you use. I worked mine in with a cloth and then left the wax to set.

Your table is now complete!
