Unicorn Puppet

This puppet was constructed with easy to find objects in the home. It can be made in about an hour.

My daughter and son loved this project!

This project requires some help from an adult.

For this project you will need…

1….2”x7” cardboard strip.

4….1”x7” cardboard strip.

assorted pieces of yarn or string.

1 pencil.

A glue gun, regular glue will also work.

Paint, to color the cardboard.

The yarn and paint colors are dictated by the creature you are making.

Start by breaking one side of all the strips of cardboard. To do this, pull the strip of cardboard downward at a 90 degree angle against the edge of a table. This will allow you to roll and glue the cardboard into roundish shapes.

For the large piece of cardboard roll loosely and glue the end making an the oval shape. This will be the body.

Roll the four smaller pieces into a round shape, with a small opening in the middle so that the yarn can be glue into the feet.

Poke holes in the body…this is where the legs will be attached to.

Cut four pieces of yarn to make the legs. My legs are about 5” long. I made my legs thicker by using 3 strands of yarn.

You could also braid the yarn or use something thicker.

Poke the yarn into the holes in the body and glue in place.

Poke the yarn into the middle of the 4 feet that you made, and glue.

This is where the creativity begins!

Now that the legs and feet are attached. Draw a head. This puppet can become anything. If you make eight legs it can be a spider. If you make wings, it can be Pegasus or a dragon. It is up to you!

I drew a unicorn head and added yarn for the mane.

Now that the main structure is complete, poke a hole in the back end of the creature.

Insert a pencil, and glue it into place.

Now for more fun….

Paint the cardboard. I painted over the permanent marker, which can still be seen. Redraw the face after the paint was dry. Painting the pencil adds a nice touch.😁
