Understanding Water Pollution: a DIY Model of Industrial Impact on Rivers
In this project, we delve into the critical issue of water pollution, focusing on the impact of industrialization on our rivers. By creating a simple yet powerful model, we demonstrate how factories, residential areas, and public facilities contribute to the contamination of water bodies. This project aims to raise awareness about the consequences of inadequate waste management and the direct discharge of pollutants into nearby rivers. Through the use of models and a simulated waterflow system powered by submersible pumps, we provide a visual representation of how human activities are leading to environmental degradation.
Supplies
- Sunboards
- Art Papers
- Craft Glue
- Cardboards
- 3watt Submersible pumps (4pcs)
- Acrylic Paints
- Soft water pipes
- Sand
- Incense for smoke
- Ice cream sticks
Design
- Using sunboards the structures of factory were built.
- The ceilings of the mock-up factories were made using corrugated sheets.
- A chimney was kept to demonstrate factory smoke.
- The factory door was introduced for some detail.
Quarter Making
- The factory staff quarters were made in a similar style, using sunboards to make the walls and panels and for the ceilings and balcony shades, corrugated sheets were used.
Layout the Structure
- Now we start to assemble. First a pedestal was taken where the project will be placed. Here we have taken a cemented slab we had.
- To create the river in between, two parts of land pieces were fixed. These land pieces were made using sunboards itself.
- And after the lands were glued onto the cement pedestal, the factory, staff quarter and the public toilet was positioned and fixed using super glue.
- One end of the river was blocked with sunboard cutting. And a hole was left in the sunboard piece, later water pipeline will be introduced to create the river's waterflow.
Making the Ground
- Now to highlight and decorate the project we have used green art papers to cover the land.
- Used craft glue to fix the papers onto the sunboards.
Sand and Grass Spreading
- A bit of land was covered with sand to create a difference in land textures.
- To create some highlighted grassland we used more art papers, folded them, made small cuts and pasted them on the sides.
- Created more details with adding fences. These fences were made by pasting ice cream sticks.
Bridge Crafting
- More details were added by creating a bridge using cardboards.
- Roads were also made and the path was detailed using white paper-cuts.
The Whole Structure
- The buildings were tagged using marker, papers and glue.
Silicone Pasting
- The sides of the river was sealed using silicone to ensure there was no spillage of water underneath.
Pipe Distribution
- Water distribution pipes were introduced.
- One pipe brings clean water from the start of the river.
- Another pipe brings polluted water from the factory.
- Another pipe brings polluted water from the public toilet and staff quarters.
- To make the demonstration functional, these pipes were laid and connected with submersible pumps installed in containers beside the project. Black colors are mixed with the water to resemble polluted water.
Conclusion
This water pollution project serves as an eye-opening illustration of the damaging effects of industrialization on our water resources. By simulating real-world scenarios, we highlight the urgent need for better waste management practices and stricter regulations to protect our rivers from pollution. This project not only educates on the environmental challenges we face but also encourages responsible behavior and proactive measures to safeguard our planet's precious water resources. Through this demonstration, we hope to inspire a greater commitment to preserving the natural world for future generations.
