Tiny Key to Erebor

If you thought it was hard to see the keyhole in the Lonely Mountain the first time, this time is gonna be terrible. In this Instructable, we will be looking at how to make a tiny wire version of Thorin's key. This key can be used as a jewelry, like a necklace, or just to have around.

This key is quite simple, and requires very few tools/materials. You will need:

  • Wire. This can be any diameter, so you can use what you think will look best.
  • Super Glue. I tried using hot glue first, but it didn't work very well. I ended up using some Gorilla Super Glue.
  • Pliers/Wire cutters. The pliers are a necessity, and have cutters on them, but I find a pair of Dykes to be very helpful when working with wire.
  • A reference. I had previously made a cardboard actual-size key, so I used it as a reference, but you can use a picture you find online.

Start Bending

Most of this project is just bending wire to the proper size and shape. To begin, start on one of the two ends and make the diamond-ish shape, then the middle shaft, then the other side. To make sure the proportions are correct, I held up the wire key to my eye with the actual key below, and lined them up.

The Hangy-thingy

For the hanging piece at the front, I made another wire square about the same size as the key head. Then, slide it through either the gap in the key or the gap in the new piece. Now, you could either leave it hanging or glue it to the head. If you are planning on making this into a necklace, I would suggest to leave it hanging.

Small Pieces

Now it is time for the finishing touches. Glue a small square to the center of the shaft diagonally. Then, glue on two triangles in the handle part facing each other.

Done!
