The Hydro Flask Helper: a Step-by-Step Guide on How to 3D Print an Object to Clean the Top of a Hydro Flask

One of the most popular water bottle brands is the Hydro Flask. These bottles keep our water nice and cold; however, it is difficult to keep all of the water bottle clean, especially the top of the water bottle! As all Hydro Flask users are aware of, cleaning the top of a Hydro Flask can be a challenge due to its narrow opening. It is too narrow to get just a paper towel down into and it can be time consuming to take the time and effort to soak the top. One solution to this cleaning issue is to create this custom 3D printed cleaning tool that can help you maintain your bottle with ease. This guide will take you through the process of designing, modeling, and 3D printing a specialized cleaning tool and then getting it ready for use! Follow these six steps to create your own Hydro Flask cleaning tool and to make sure you stay healthy as you hydrate!

Design the Tool

1.1 Identify the Requirements: 

  1. Determine what type of cleaning tool you need. Consider features such as: 
  2. A long handle for reach. 
  3. A brush head or scrubbing pad to clean the interior. 
  4. An ergonomic design for comfortable handling. 
  5. For this item, we will create an object that perfectly fits the rounded edge of the hydroflask top in order to get any gunk out!

1.2 Sketch Your Idea: 

  1. Create a rough sketch of your design on paper or use a digital tool. Include dimensions to fit the Hydro Flask’s opening (typically around 2.5 inches in diameter). 
  2. Think about the length of the handle—around 3-5 inches is usually adequate. 

1.3 Use CAD Software: 

  1. Choose a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to create a 3D model. Popular options include TinkerCAD (user-friendly for beginners), Fusion 360, or SketchUp. I used TinkerCAD to be able to build my image within the computer software. It is easy to use as a first time 3D printer and lets you customize the length, width, and radius to the size of the hydro flask top! (making it so that this item can be used on ALL sizes of hydro flasks!) 
  2. Start modeling the handle and the cleaning head. Ensure that the rounded edge is wide enough to effectively clean but narrow enough to fit inside the bottle opening. Also, consider how this item can be multifaceted to clean different faces of the bottle top. By making the handle of the cleaner have a pointed end, you can use that end to clean the smaller crevice in the straw area. 

Prepare the Model for 3D Printing

2.1 Export the Model: 

  1. Once satisfied with your design, export the model in a format compatible with 3D printing, typically STL or OBJ. 
  2. Upload the model to the computer that is connected to the 3D printer and download it so you are able to place it into the 3D printer software. 

2.2 Check for Errors: 

  1. Use tools like Microsoft 3D Builder or Meshmixer to check for any mesh errors. Fix any holes or non-manifold edges to ensure a smooth printing process. 

2.3 Slice the Model: 

  1. Open your sliced model in slicing software (like Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Simplify3D). I used Cura when creating this object. 
  2. Configure the settings: 
  3. Layer height (0.1mm for finer details, 0.2mm for quicker prints). 
  4. Infill density (20-30% is usually sufficient for a cleaning tool). 
  5. Supports if necessary, depending on your design. 

Select the Right Material

3.1 Choose Your Filament: 

  1. Consider materials that are durable and safe for cleaning. Common choices include: 
  2. PLA: Easy to print, biodegradable but less durable for long-term use. 
  3. PETG: More durable and resistant to moisture, making it a better choice for a cleaning tool. 
  4. TPU: A flexible filament that can provide a soft, scrubbing surface but may be harder to print. 
  5. Consider colors that you find appealing as this is a practical object but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be fun and stylish! 

3.2 Prepare the Printer: 

  1. Ensure your 3D printer is calibrated and clean. Load the chosen filament and preheat the nozzle according to the filament requirements. 

3D Print the Tool

4.1 Start the Print: 

  1. Begin printing the object. Monitor the first few layers to ensure proper adhesion to the print bed. 

4.2 Troubleshoot if Necessary: 

  1. If you encounter issues like warping or layer separation, pause the print and troubleshoot. This may involve adjusting bed temperature, nozzle height, or using adhesion aids like glue stick or painter’s tape on the bed. 

4.3 Completion: 

  1. Once the print is finished, allow it to cool completely before removing it from the print bed. This prevents warping or damage. 

Clean Up!

5.1 Clean Up the Print: 

  1. Remove any support structures carefully and sand down rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. This is especially important if you’re using the tool in contact with your Hydro Flask. 

5.2 Test the Tool: 

  1. Before cleaning your Hydro Flask, test the tool in a safe environment. Dip it in warm, soapy water and scrub to ensure its effectiveness and comfort. 

5.3 Use the Cleaning Tool: 

  1. When ready, use the tool to clean the inside rim and top of your Hydro Flask. The handle should allow for easy maneuvering, and the head should effectively scrub away any residue. 
  2. The best way to use the device is to put a paper towel around the circular part of the 3D printed object (the head) and use the handle to twist the object around the slim part of the top. This will allow the paper towel to collect any residue. Also, the skinnier pointier part of the object can be used to dig out any stubborn or hidden residue! 

5.4 Maintenance: 

  1. Clean the tool after each use with warm soapy water and allow it to dry completely. Store it in a clean, dry place to prolong its lifespan.
