This is very short and easy project.

While getting the GL Aquaponic Interlocking Raft System (GLAIRS) project off the ground we deceided to experiment with the plant collars.

They are made from closed cell foam with a cross cut into them to insert seedlings for support in the 5 and 7.5cm slatted (net) propagation pots.

Instead of a seedling, we placed lettuce seeds into the collars and placed it directly onto the water in the GLAIRS on a koi pond and to our suprise and delight the seeds germinated.

We tried the experiment using a large tray using bush bean, sweet melon, rocket, lettuce and cauliflower seed and within 4 to 5 days in full sun, the seeds germinated

What have we achieved.

Seed has been germinated, without a germination substrate, directly on the water in the collars. Once the root is long enough the collar and seedling are placed in a propagation pot and the inserted into a raft system or vertical garden systen and allowed to grow either Aquaponically using fish waste (organic) or Hydroponically (not organic).

Kids can try this on their fish tanks at home or on the fish pond or even on the windowsill in a jar of water.

Aquarium Application

You can now grow edible plants from seed, on your fish tank at home, with the growing plants helping to filter the water and supply cover for fry (baby fish) in the roots.

Easy, simple, no mess
