Teacher's Whiteboard Compass
Hi friends,
In this instructable, I will clearly demonstrate how to create a large-sized whiteboard compass, using wood pieces.
Not like as compasses we use for papers or workbooks, the whiteboard is much slippy and will damage its surface if we use sharp points for the center arm of a compass. In this instruction, I use a different method to stick the center arm on a specific point on the whiteboard without slipping and without damaging the whiteboard.
You can follow step by step and the full detailed instruction video is also available.
Thank you.
Enjoy!
Supplies
Item List
01- 3 Pieces of wood 5cm x 25cm x 1.5cm
02- Nuts and bolts
03- Transparent bottle sealing cap
04- Screws
Tools
01- Hacksaw
02- Screwdriver
03- Drill machine
04- Compass
05- Pen
06- Sandpapers
Create First Arm of Compass
- Get one wood piece and mark the first arm of the compass, to the total length of 20cm.
- Mark and cut the design
- Use sand papers to smoothing edges.
Create Center Arm of the Compass
Prepare the second piece of wood for the center arm.
- The drawing is similar to the first arm, with small modifications on the right end for the center pin.
- Draw and cut the center arm
- Use sand papers to smoothing edges
Drilling Center Holes
- Drill the center holes of the first arm and the center arm, for mounting.
- Temporary mount two pieces with nut and bolt, for sanding
- Sand round edges of both arms
Center Pin Hole
- In the center arm, mark the center pinhole at the edge of the arm
- Drill the hole using the drill machine
Marker Pen Holder
- Mark the pen holder on the third wood piece
- Drill the pen holder hole to be able to insert a marker pen
- Cut off inside and outside points as shown
Compass Handle
- Get the rest of the third wood piece, and mark the compass handle
- Drill the center hole
- Cut off unnecessary parts
- Round corners of the handle with sandpapers
Mount Pen Holder
- Insert screw nut from the inside of pen hole, and mount the pen holder to the first arm of the compass.
- Use glue if necessary for better contact
Pen Mounting / Tightening Screw
- Add the marker pen mounting screw.
- First, insert the bolt inside the created hole
- Then insert the nut from the outside and tighten
Mount Three Wooden Pieces
- Mount the first arm, handle, and center arm together with a nut and bolt.
- Adding washers between parts will smooth the angle adjustments
- Using a butterfly bolt is a better option.
Mount the Pen
- Mount the pen using the pen mounting bolt
Center Point Creation
- Mark the center point of the transparent cap
- Drill the center hole
- Insert screw nut, loose bolt or two, and mount it on the end of center arm
Finished!
- Now almost our compass is complete
- You can add double tape, rubber cap to the center cap for better friction of the center point on the whiteboard.
