Sweet Sugar Hand Scrub

IMG_1040.JPG

With all the Covid hand washing and hand sanitizing, my hands get really dried out. I love to use essential oils for all kinds of things- besides diffusing. I wanted to show you how I make my hand scrub. I know lots of people like to use raw or regular sugar but I find that using powdered sugar gives a slightly abrasive yet smooth feel.

This is very simple to do and you probaly have everything you need in your kitchen. Let's get started!

Supplies

Some type of oil- olive, grapeseed, avacado, coconut, almond

Powdered sugar- or whatever you prefer or have on hand-raw, white, brown, coconut, turbinado

Bowl and spoon

Essential oils-optional

Food coloring-optional

Container to store scrub- repurpose an old jar or make up container

Gather Ingredients and Supplies

You can use any type of oil you want or have on hand. I prefer almond or MCT coconut oil, which is coconut oil in liquid form, not solid. You can also use any type of sugar. I prefer to use powdered sugar. I like the way it feels on my hands. It's not too rough or coarse. Kind of silky even. You can use essential oils if you have them but it's not necessary. You may also use food coloring or not, your choice.

Oil and Sugar

Measure equal parts oil and sugar in two separate bowls. It depends on how much you want to make and the size of the storage container. I suggest to not make too much because some oils can go rancid after a few months.

Adding Extras

This is the time to add any extras. If you are using essential oils or food coloring, you should do it now. These need to be added to the oil in the bowl. This way it helps distribute more evenly. You may add as much essential oil as you like. I say the more the better! I used about 15 drops of lemon but it still wasn't as strong as I like.

Now for the coloring- do NOT add as much as you like unless you want your hands that color. I only used one drop and it's very light green.

Now stir it together. It may not stir too well, just do your best. The coloring leaves little dots in the oil. If you use a brown colored sugar, it will not take the food coloring well. It would just be a big mess.

Mixing

Now it's time to mix. Just dump the sugar into the oil and stir, stir, stir! This can take a little while to get the coloring evenly distributed. You can see the small drops of color in the picture. It actually took me a whille to get it smooth and even. You could use a mixer to speed up the process. It makes it really smooth and a little fluffy. I wasn't making very much so I didn't do this.

Filling the Container

Tada! Now you're done. Just put that delicious smelling sweet sugar scrub in the container and take it to the bathroom or kitchen to try it out.

You can experiment with different oils and scents. Make a big batch for Christmas gifts, wedding or birthday party take-alongs, give to special friends or keep it all for yourself. We all need to wash our hands- now you can wash and protect them in style!
