Sunny Side Up Egg Hat
Here is how to make your own sunny side up egg hat.
Supplies
paper and pencil - to make the pattern
scissors
sewing machine
a safety pin
tape measure
sewing pins
5/8 yard of felt
5/8 yard of crinoline
1/4 inch elastic
a yellow baseball cap
white thread
Making a Pattern
To make the pattern, first you must find the radius of the inner circle. To do this you must first find the circumference of your head. Using a tape measure, measure around your head. Next, divide the number you get by 2pi or 6.28. Round to the nearest whole number.
For example, the circumference of my head measured 24 inches. 24 divided by 6.28 is 3.82, making the radius of the circle 4 in.
Next, you can decide how large you would like the brim to be. I made mine 8 in. You can make your's larger or smaller depending on how floppy you would like the hat to be.
Add the two numbers together. For mine this came out to be 12 inches
Get a piece of paper, a pencil, and a ruler.
From the corner measure down to the first number you got for the radius, and do the same from the corner horizontally. Using a ruler continue to measure from the corner, then join the marks with a curve.
For the outer circle do the same thing measuring from the corner and using the radius plus brim length number.
Cut Out the Pattern
Next cut out the pattern.
Cut the Fabric
Fold the fabric in half, and then half again. Position the pattern on the fabric so the inner circle faces the corner, and the straight pieces of the pattern are in line with the folds. Pin the pattern to the fabric, and cut it out.
You will need to do this twice with the felt, and once with the crinoline
Sew the Three Layers Together
Lay the three layers together so that the two felt pieces are on top of each other, with the crinoline layer on the bottom. Then sew the layers together ONLY on the outside, do not sew the inner circle.
Trim the Crinoline and Cut Notches
Trim the crinoline on the outside circle so that it is about half the length that it was originally. Then cut notches in the outside and inside ring.
Flip It Right Side Out
flip it right side out, so that the crinoline is now the middle layer.
Sew the Inside Circle
Fold the flaps in and pin them, leaving one flap open. Then sew close to the edge around the circle, leaving a gap where the open notch is.
Sew a second circle all the way around 3/8 to a 1/2 inch away from the previous stitch line to create a casing for the elastic.
Thread the Elastic
Next, cut the 1/4 inch elastic two inches shorter than the circumference of your head. Using a safety pin, thread the elastic through the casing created in the previous step.
Pin the two ends of elastic overlapping and test to find how tight you would like the elastic. Then sew the elastic together in three places where it overlaps. Cut off the excess elastic.
Fold in the tabs and sew the rest of the inside circle closed.
You're Finished!
Next, you can stretch this over a yellow baseball cap.
And you're done! Now you have your very own sunny side up egg hat.
You can also use a green hat for the green eggs part of green eggs and ham.
