Starter's Guide ThiEye Dr. X
Here is a full guide for beginners on how to start your flying adventures with ThiEye's Dr.X mini drone. It is a great drone for novice pilots, very stable and robust. Best thing about it, you can get it for around 80$/70€ including shipping. It is controlled by wifi, so you can use your smartphone or tablet to control it and receive the real time video signal from the drone on your screen.
Unboxing
The box includes everything you need except a smartphone/tablet which is used as the remote controller. The packing list includes:
- 1x assembled mini drone Dr. X
- 2x propeller guards which are optional
- 4x spare propellers (2x clockwise, 2x counterclockwise)
- 1x propeller removal tool
- 1x 3,7V 650mAh Li-po battery
- 1x micro USB cable
- 1x User manual (English, German, Chinese, Italian, Russian)
Insert Battery
- Remove the film protecting the golden contacts of the battery
- Insert the battery in the back of the drone. The arrows on the battery face upwards.
Charge the Battery
- Connect the micro USB cable to the port on the back of the drone. Connect to USB charger.
- The blue front LEDs blink while charging and are solid blue when fully charged.
Insert Micro SD Card
- You can use any class 10 micro SD card up to 32GB.
- Insert the micro SD card in the slot on the back of the drone. The golden contacts of the card face downwards.
Optional: Propeller Guards
- Propeller guards reduce the risk of harm or damage to people, objects and the drone itself. I recommend using them indoors.
- Mount the guards by clicking them on the motors.
Connect Via App
- Download Thieye's Dr. X app on your smartphone or tablet. It is available on Google's play store as well as on thieye.com
- Turn on the drone by pressing the power button for 3 seconds
- Search for a wifi network starting with "thieye" and connect
- Use the password 12345678
- Open the app and press fly. The display will show you the drone's camera perspective as well as virtual buttons and joysticks.
Control the Drone Via App
- All the controls are virtual, meaning you need to touch the screen of you smartphone/tablet and press/swipe
- On the bottom of the screen are buttons to take a picture and start recording a video
- On the top next to the settings button is the automatic 360° rotation button. After pressing the drone will automatically turn 360°.
- Then comes the calibration button: you need it only if your drone was not stable in flight. make sure your drone sits flat before you press this button.
- The red "E" button stands for emergency landing. The motors will immediately stop spinning and your drone will fall out of the sky.
- The next indicator shows how much memory is left of your micro SD card
- The wifi symbol indicates the wifi signal strength. This is important as the drone receives alle commands via wifi. The range without extender is around 30 meter/yards.
- The battery indicator on the right shows how much power the drone has left. I experienced a fast decline after 50% so be careful.
- Bellow the battery indicator is the take off / landing button. After pressing it, a virtual bar shows which you need to swipe to the right to initiate landing/take off.

Now after finishing all these steps you can enjoy flying. Here is an inspirational video for you with footage by the Dr. X. Have fun!
