Spooky Spider Bites
This year for Halloween, I wanted to make something that had a creative twist and was healthy to eat as a snack. My grandkids are scared of snakes, but they are intrigued by spiders. I took their enjoyable treat one step farther and created these edible spiders which they love. Each bite has peanut butter and pretzels which give it a nice crunch. It is hard for them to eat just one spider! Happy Halloween!
Supplies
Ingredients for Spider Bites:
- 1 ½ cups crunchy peanut butter
- 3/4 cup pure honey
- 1 ½ cups old fashioned oats (rolled oats)
- ½ cup chocolate protein powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 bottle Small Candy Eyes (11 grams)
- 1 box of Red Hots (5.5 ounces)
- 1 Bag Salted Pretzels - broken into small sections (for spider legs)
- Water, optional for bite batter if dry
Supplies:
1/8 Teaspoon
1 Tablespoon
1/4, 1/2 & 1 cup measuring cups
1 small mixing bowl
1 medium mixing bowl
1 - 1 ounce cookie scoop
1 Spatula
1 - 9 X 13 Sheet of Parchment Paper
1 - 9 X 13 Baking Sheet
1 small paring knife
1 small fork
Spider Bites Display:
1 large plate for displaying Spider Bites (black, gray, orange or white)
Any combination of Halloween Props: black material, spooky netting, spider webs or pumpkins.
Makes: 24 Spider Bites
Combine the First 6 Ingredients
Add the creamy peanut butter, honey, rolled oats, chocolate protein powder, salt and chia seeds to a mixing bowl and use a rubber spatula to mix until the batter is combined. If batter is dry, add 1-2 teaspoons of water.
Use a mini cookie scoop (1 ounce) to form ball approx. 1 to 1 ½ inches in size, then coat by rolling ball in cocoa powder until fully coated. Then drop each ball with a spoon onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet. Take a fork and flatten the top of each ball gently.
Take two red hots or small candy eyes by placing gently into one end of the spider bite.
Using a paring knife, gingerly cut the pretzels for spider legs, approximately 4 to 6 per spider bite. Then insert into the spider bite.
Please baking tray in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour to set, then remove.
Assemble Spider Bites on Plate
Using the spatula, slide under each spider bite and place on plate until you have enough spooky spiders to enjoy.
