These crochet baby sweaters are just too cute! The adorable coat is perfect for newborn boys and girls. It won't take long to crochet this huggable sweater. I have added a snowflake applique to mark the coming of Winter.

The sweater is made for the size 1 year. To extend it you can modify the number of chains. To make this sweater you would need a basic knowledge of crocheting. This is an intermediate level project.

Material

Terminology:

ch(s) – chain(s)

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

Step 1:

Materials Yarn - 8 ply (Blue and white)

Crochet hook - 4mm hook

Scissors

Needle

Thread

Front and Back - Start

First you begin with the back. Both are crocheted identically.

So you begin with a chain and then begin crocheting on it.

The length of the chain should be half the waist length.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Front and Back - Till Arms

Repeat last row until piece measures 5½ (for 1 year old).

So now you get a block rectangular crochet piece.

Arm Holes

IMG_20161013_173943.jpg

Now when you reach the arm hole you need to make a small adjustment.

Next Row: Turn, slip st over first 2, sc, ch 1, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc

Leave remaining sts unworked.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9½ from beginning. Fasten off.

Now you will reach till the neck portion.

Shape the Neck

IMG_20161013_173959.jpg

Now for the neck portion in each row you will reduce 1 stitch.

Start from the edge. Sl St and Ch1, Do Sc across for 12 stitches. Ch 1, miss 1 stitch and sc across back. Thus you have reduced to 11 stitches.

So this till you are left till 8 stitches.

Do the same with the other side too.

Front Portion

This portion is also made the same way as the back. Thus you have 2 identical portions.

Sew

Only thing left is sew both pieces together. Sew both pieces together.

yes you have done the basic sweater now. If you like it with no sleeves you can leave it this way doing just the neck work.

I am going for a full hand sweater. So lets move into it.

Sleeves

IMG_20161013_174614.jpg

Attach the yarn at the sleeves and do Sc at the spaces evenly. Sl St to the beginning stitch.

1 - Now ch 1, Sc across. and St st

2 - Ch 1, Sc in same stitch, Sc around, 2 Sc in the last stitch.

3 - Now ch 1, Sc across. and St st

Do 3 till the required sleeve length.

Do last two row with the colour white yarn, just add a little cute touch to the sweater.

Round Neck

Do (1) for 3 times and fasten off.

Complete the Sweater

Attach the white yarn at the bottom and do Sc around and Sl st to first Sc.

Add Applique

You can be creative at this step. Add anything you like. I made a simple snowflake applique to the sweater.

Snow flake pattern:

The pattern is taken from here.

Chain 5
Join into 1st chain with a slip stitch to form a circle

Round 1: Ch 4 (this counts as as hdc, ch 2) Hdc, Ch2 (5 times) into the circle or magic circle

Round 2: Work into the 6 spaces you just created To begin sl st into the first space to the left of your hook.

First snowflake cluster

Ch 3, sl st into same space Ch 5, sl st into the same space Ch 3, sl st into the same space Continue the rest of the clusters as follows: *ch 1, sl st into the next space, Ch 3, sl st, ch 5, sl st, ch 3, sl st*

Repeat between * and * 4 more times,

ch 1 and sl st into the very first sl st of this round, bind off
