I needed some shelves for my entertainment center so I decided to make it. I went with pallets because I wanted a look that was both sophisticated and elegant... or maybe the opposite of that. Anyway I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Basically what I did is procure a pallet, cut it in half, bolt 2x4's on the sides, and sand the rough edges. I also applied some mineral oil to enhance the look. Here are a couple things I learned along the way:

  • Pallets are not perfectly square. I ended up with 2 halves of a pallet that didn't line up right. I had to make some adjustments when putting the shelf together so it at least appeared to have straight lines and 90 degree angles.
  • Pallets have lots of nails. Be sure to use a cutting tool that wont break or hurt you if you accidentally cut through a nail.
