Simple Globglogabgalab Costume

Part of the fun of Halloween keeping current with your costume. This year, the Globglogabgalab video is popular with my kids.

The original Globglogabgalab video:

has inspired dozens of remixes

and here's our lo-fi version in costume:

This is an easy costume to make. It is mostly a lycra bodysuit stuffed with balloons. But we still have a few insights to share from our experiences putting it together.

Supplies

  1. Lycra open-faced body suit Here's the one I ordered on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OFQJC5E Go up at least two sizes to get that amorphous Globglogabgalab look. My kid would typically wear a small and I ordered a large, which was about right for this costume.
  2. A few balloons. We used seven water balloons that were the right size for a kid's costume. Regular full-sized 12-inch balloons would have been too big to create the desired lumpy effect.
  3. One exercise puzzle mat for providing some structure to the bottom of the suit. We had some left over from other projects but you can also order them online. Here's one example: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Exercise-Foam-Interlocking-Tiles/dp/B0719B8HQZ

  4. You'll also need a utility knife to cut the mat. Here's what I use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006O87O6

Step 1: Create a Foam Donut to Go Around Your Waist

Cut the exercise puzzle mat into a circle and then cut the middle out to create the donut shape. Then cut a slot in the donut shape so you can get in and out of it. You want the donut to fit snuggly around the waist but not be too tight. The donut provides support for the balloons so they don't slip down below the waist.

Step 2: Cut Out the Globglogabgalab Ears or Eyebrows

You can use the scrap pieces to create the eyebrows (or possibly ears? it's hard to say.) of the Globglogabgalab. These are just triangles and will stay in place reasonably well with the lycra head.

Step 3: Blow Up Some Balloons

We used several water balloons because they were about the right size for the lumpy Globglogabgalab look. You could probably also use larger balloons and just not fill them up as much.

Step 4: Assemble the Costume

Sit in a chair and put on the lycra tights up to your waist. Then put the donut and tape the balloons around the donut then pull up the rest of the lycra suit. Someone will need to zip you up. Put in the foam triangles last by sticking them inside your hood.

Congratulations, you are the Globglogabgalab. Really delightful!
