Show Your Sparkle With Hair Tinsel!
As a college-aged girl in a sorority, I am constantly looking for something that adds that little something extra to our festive events. Hair tinsel does just that! Hair tinsel is an easy way to add some personality to your hair without the commitment of dye or a haircut. It can add some sparkle to the life and hair of people of all ages! Add a fun and sparkly twist to your hair by putting hair tinsel in it using this Hair Tinsel Instructable!
Supplies
- 1 package of hair tinsel
- 1 pair of pliers
- 1 crochet hook (Optional)
- 1 loop threader
- 1 comb
- 12 - 15 hair beads
- 1 pair of scissors
Prepare Your Hair
- Gently comb through your hair and section your hair into layers of your hair to work with. These layers are likely to be similar layers used when curling your hair.
Prepare the Bead
The number of beads used will depend on how much tinsel you want in your hair. These hair beads are different from the standard plastic beads used in hairstyles. These are more pliable and able to be closed to secure the tinsel against the hair. These can be purchased in the proper color to match your hair.
- Gather between 3 and 4 pieces of your desired colors of tinsel together. The number of tinsel strands used is dependent on how sparkly you want your hair to be. You can mix and match colors to have a customizable hair tinsel hairstyle.
- Then, use the crochet hook to grab the bunch of tinsel at the center point of the tinsel string.
- Pull the tinsel through the bead, so the bead sits at the center of the tinsel.
- Double-knot the tinsel on the bead to secure it.
No Crochet Hook Alternative: Gather the strands of your desired colors of tinsel together. Then, string the strands through the bead with your fingers like threading a needle. Pull the bead along the string so that the bead sits at the center of the tinsel. Double knot the tinsel for the bead to secure it. This is how I prefer to insert the tinsel in the hair bead.
Pull Hair Through the Bead
- Push the hair bead to the base of the loop threader.
- Then, select a small section of your hair that is about 3-4 strands of hair thick. Pull the section of hair through the opening of the loop threader.
- Then, pull the bead off the loop threader. Once the bead is no longer on the loop threader, your hair should be threaded through the bead.
- You will then push the bead up the section of hair, so it is near the root of the section of hair. To avoid pain from the hair bead, the bead should be about a quarter of an inch from where the root of your hair meets your scalp.
Clamp the Hair Bead
- Using the pliers, clamp the bead tightly parallel to the head. This adheres the bead to the strands of hair. Clamping the bead parallel will allow the bead to rest flat against the head.
To avoid pain from the hair bead, clamp the bead about a quarter of an inch from where the root of your hair meets your scalp. Clamping closer may cause headaches to occur.
Cut Extra Length
- Using scissors, cut the extra length of the tinsel. You can cut it to your desired length; however, typically, hair tinsel is intended to be the same length as the rest of the hair.
Enjoy Your Fun Hair!
Repeat Steps 1-6 until you are satisfied with the amount of tinsel in your hair and enjoy your sparkly hair!
The tinsel in your hair should last as long as you'd like but can be removed easily. To remove, use pliers to clamp the bead in the opposite direction and slid the open bead down your hair. You can wash, brush, and use heat on your hair. With heat, follow the directive of your tinsel, but generally, you should be able to use up to 320 degrees on the tinsel.
