Sarimanok “the Legendary Rooster” Scrolling Pattern Art
The pattern applied in this artwork is the scrolling technique wherein it displays a variety of spiral patterns in a variety of shapes. The figure that is made is Sarimanok from Maranao art from the Philippines which is my home country. Sarimanok can be translated as a colorful rooster signifying good fortune. This legendary bird exhibits scrolling techniques in its head and tails which caught my attention. I also focus on these existing patterns that the Sarimanok has already- so in this project, I take the concept in an exaggerated way in which almost all the parts of the rooster will be scroll patterns.
Supplies
-Paper Quilling Strip (or Colored Paper that will be cut into strips), in this project I’m using 5mm as the width of the paper.
-Slotted quilling tool
-Quilling Board
-Tweezers
-Scissors
-Gold Paper
-Glue
-Wire
Envision Your Design
It Can Be 2d or 3d ( It Can Be an Animal Figure, Letter Name, or Object)
Plan Out the Shape Pattern You Want to Apply to Each Section.
(Some of the Quilling Shape Patterns Can Be Tight-rolled Coil, Open Coil, Teardrop, Marquis, Tulip, Combination, Etc.)
Start Coiling the Paper by Putting the Edge of the Paper Strip to the Slotted Quilling Stick.
Coil the Paper All the Way.
Let It Loose and Place It on the Quilling Board in Your Desired Size.
(If You Don’t Have a Quilling Board, Adjust the Coil to Your Preferred Size). Then Add Glue on the End of the Paper Strip.
Apply the Design That You Want
By pinching the circumference of the circle, you can create a new shape of the scroll pattern. I use the teardrop shape the most in this project which has a one-pinch approach you can do two pinch and it will the the marquise, three pinch can turn into tulip.
Repeat the Steps 3-6 Until You Achieve the Amount of Scroll Pattern Needed.
Assemble the Individual Pattern in Your Desired Design.
When assembling the Sarimanok, I started with the wings because this will be the focal point of the project. Then, I did the base of the body.
Add Some Final Touches to the Design to Showcase the Beauty of the Work. (I Added Some Feathers, Gold Papers, and Wires).
And that's how you make a Paper Quilling Pattern.
