Sapele's Spirit Wooden Ring
Hi fellow makers! Today I decided to make my very first instructable. This is a project that can be made without any power tools(although they come in handy) in about 3 hours. Without any further ado let's get started.
Supplies
- Wood venneer, in this case Sapele's wood. (0,2 - 0,8 mm thick works best)
- Sand paper
- Polishing compound
- Cutter
- Ciano acrilate(CA) glue. Also known as locktite.
- (Optional) Dremmel or rottary tool( necessary when sanding).
Cut the Veneer Into Strips
Start by cutting 0,8 by 30 (cm) strips of wood. You should cut them in the direction of the wood lines, otherwise it will break as you work with it. Use a cutter, scissors will destroy the brittle wood.
Cook the Strips for 20 Minutes
Submerge the wood in boiling water for 20 minutes. This step will make the wood less brittle and easier to bend.
Use a round object to shape the wood into a ring shape and a gripper to hold it in shape. You can sand the inner end of the loop untill it is paper thin to make the process easier.
Gluing
Once the wood is dried, use a very thin layer of ca glue to turn the strip into a ring. Dont forget to use protective equipment. After cutting the excess venneer (I used 3 layers), sand the edges.
Sanding and CA Finishing
Once the ring has the correct shape, start carefully adding thin layers of ca glue every 15 minutes(9 layers in total). I used the included brush to do this step.
Polishing and Finishing
After polishing you should have a really nice ring, hope you enjoy making it!
