SMALL TEMPORARY OVEN ABOVE THE KITCHEN STOVE
This project contains the instructions to make a small temporary oven above the top of a kitchen stove. This small oven allows to cook food with the wood stove instead of using gas or electricity.
Supplies
-n°1 old style wood burning kitchen stove;
-n°2 long refractory bricks LxWxH= 40x20x3 cm (see pictures above for an example);
-n°4 short refractory bricks LxWxH=30x20x3 cm (see pictures above for an example);
-n°1 set of used aluminium foils (see picture above for an example; according to the size of used foils, n°4 foils may be adequate, to cover minimum 50x40 cm);
-n°1 lifted grid, obtained from an existing old oven grid with left and right borders bent (see pictures above for an example);
-n°1 oven thermometer (see picture above for an example);
Grid Installation
On the top of the stove place the lifted grid, previously obtained from an oven grid by bending the right and left sides in a vice (the sides should be bent at approximately 90°). The bent sides should lift the grid from the stove top of minimum 5 cm. The grid must be placed above the hottest side of the stove.
Bricks Installation
Around the lifted grid place the refractory bricks vertically, laid on their longer side, following the example of the pictures.
Two bricks will be laid above the long parallel bricks, acting as the roof of the oven.
Before positioning the last roof brick the thermometer can be placed on the lifted grid, near the oven door (see the picture).
Note: the bricks must be positioned trying to minimize the openings left between them.
Aluminium Foil Installation
Lay the aluminium foils to cover the roof of the oven and the openings left between roof and walls (see the pictures for an example). Once laid the foils like in the first picture, they can be bent over the side walls as visible in the second picture.
Oven Preheating and Use
Make enough fire in the stove and wait at least 30 minutes, then move the front brick, used as door of the small oven; use insulating gloves to move the brick.
If the temperature reached in the oven, visible in the thermometer, is adequate, You can then proceed to insert the food to be cooked, in Pyrex glass, silicone mould or similar means. Place again the door brick in place and adjust the aluminium foil to cover the openings between roof and walls.
Use a timer to alert You when half of the cooking time has elapsed. You can then open the door with protective gloves and turn of 180° the Pyrex or the silicone mould, to be sure that the food will receive an uniform heating.
Oven Dismantling
Once no other food has to be cooked, the oven may be dismantled, putting the bricks on the colder side of the stove, or in another corner of the kitchen (where they will not be a burden for other activities). The lifted grid may be laid above the bricks as shown in the picture.
