Rocking Love Seat

I am moving to a new space, and in doing so, I need furniture. I have always had a love for rocking chairs and hammocks, and thought about combining them to make a couch for my room. That's why this project was made.

The loveseat is 4 feet across, with a canvas fabric across the middle acting as a seat. The fabric will later be held by nails, but is currently held by staples. The project, besides the fabric, is made of ¾ inch furniture grade plywood, with a cross beam that's 3 by 2. The frame was entirely modeled in Onshape before being built on a CNC machine.

This is my first project in woodworking and on Instructables, so please give me advice on how to approve this project and its documentation!

¾ inch Plywood, furniture grade

Canvas Fabric, 1 yard

4 ¼ inch bolts

2 construction screws

4 smaller screws

If you are more experienced in woodwork than I am, this is likely not necessary, but I have much more experience in CAD than wood work.

I made a preliminary model to test shaping and design. This makes it easy to make and test little tweaks to the love seat. The link to the onshape document is below:

After constructing the model to your liking, take DXF files of the sides, rocker, and bottom beams. Lay these out to your liking to fit on the wood you picked out and attach wood to CNC machine. Run the machine to get the pieces. I personally did the back beam in the CNC machine as well, for speed purposes.

DXF files of my own are attached, though check if they fit your wood and machine.

Step is self descriptive. I, due to time constraints, did not do this, but recommend you do.

Place bolts in the legs of the sides, connecting them to the rocker. Try to line up the end of each as well as you can.

Afterwards, hammer in each bottom beam into the rocker slots, connecting each side of the structure.

Cut out Beams to fit your project. My back beam ended up around 48 inches by 9 inches, and my cross beam was 2x3x48 inches. I personally cut the back beam In the CNC machine, to save on energy.

First, place the cross beam in the slots in the seat of the sides, and screw it in with construction screws. Drill pilot holes in the back beam and the back of the seats, line them up and screw the back board in. I recommend placing something, such as scrap wood, under the rockers to keep it in place.

Using whatever method you find appropriate, such as staples or nails, attach Canvas fabric to the back and center beam. Leaving an appropriate amount of give to the fabric, to give a seat like look. I recommend wrapping the fabric around the boards then nailing them in, going through multiple layers. See the cover image.
