Reflections of the Sunset: an Artistic Journey of Natural Connection

WhatsApp Image 2024-09-09 at 8.47.14 PM (2).jpeg

This project was born on an autumn day as I watched the leaves gently fall from the trees. Inspired by nature, I gathered the fallen branches and began to recreate the landscape before me. This process deeply connected me with the natural world, and since then, I have continued working with eco-friendly and sustainable materials, particularly bamboo, which stands out for its rapid growth and regenerative capabilities. This artwork reflects the respect and gratitude for the planet that nourishes and supports us.

Select an inspiring landscape. For this project, we will create a sunset over the sea. You can find a reference image online or generate one using AI tools such as Bing.

Draw the Frame

On the bamboo panel, use the ruler and graphite pencil to draw a 0.7 cm margin around the edges. This margin will guide the attachment of the frame later and help you organize your workspace

Create the Sketch

Position the bamboo panel horizontally and lightly sketch the landscape. Ensure to proportionally size the elements within the drawing, including the sun, waves, and the boat in the foreground.

Start by forming the sun using bamboo skewers. Cut the skewers and glue them in concentric circles around the sun area. Allow the glue to dry for 15-20 minutes before moving on to the next step.

Build the Boat With Toothpicks

Use the toothpicks to construct the boat, shaping it into a triangular form. Cut and glue each piece, adding volume to the front of the boat. Let the glue dry completely before continuing.

Create the Waves

Cut the toothpicks and glue them along the bottom of the panel, aligning them consistently to simulate the movement of the water. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.

Fill in the Sun

Use additional toothpicks to fill in the sun, placing them horizontally to add texture and dimension. Let the glue dry.

Paint the Boat and Sea

Apply brown acrylic paint to the boat using a No. 4 brush. For the waves and sea, use light and dark blue paint, respectively, applying soft brushstrokes to create movement. Use a No. 2 brush to outline the waves with white, blending the blue to add realism. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Paint the Sunset

Begin by using a No. 4 brush to apply red paint around the outer edge of the sunset, blending it with orange as you move towards the center. Paint the sun with yellow and add orange highlights to blend the color transitions smoothly. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next to avoid unwanted color mixing.

Add Shadows With Foam (Optional)

To add depth and shadows, cut out two small boat silhouettes and a few small bird shapes from black foam. Glue the boat silhouettes onto the waves to create the effect of distant boats, and place the bird shapes in the sky for added detail. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Attach the Frame

Cut the balsa wood to create the frame: two pieces of 35 cm and two pieces of 24.3 cm. Glue these pieces to the edges of the margin you drew earlier, ensuring that the 35 cm pieces are placed along the top and bottom edges (width) and the 24.3 cm pieces are placed along the sides (height). Allow the glue to dry completely before handling the finished piece.
