Rainbow Glazed Palmier Cinnamon Buns

For my Rainbow Instructable, I wanted to create a recipe that is easy to prepare and different from other rainbow baked goods that have been entered in other years. I thought about palmiers which are cookies that are rolled in from each side to the center and are usually made with puff pastry. I had some canned biscuit dough in the refrigerator and I figured I could make that shape using my dough. I have lots of colored sprinkles and food coloring so I felt like I was ready. I wasn't sure how it would work out, but I gave it a go! Follow along to see how I made them.

Supplies

Red Sprinkles

Orange Sprinkles

Yellow Sprinkles

Green Sprinkles

Blue Sprinkles

Purple Sprinkles

Red Food Color

Yellow Food Color

Blue Food Color

Green Food Color

16 Ounces Refrigerated Biscuit Dough

2 Tablespoons Butter

Confectioners' Sugar

Ground Cinnamon

7 small bowls

6 spoons

plastic wrap

silicone baking mat

1/2 sheet baking pan

unflavored dental floss

small pastry brush

rolling pin

small spatula



Open the Dough

Unwrap and open the package of dough. As I was unwrapping the dough package, it popped itself open loudly! Not my favorite thing to do in the kitchen! :)

Roll Them

Press and roll each biscuit to form a rectangle shape.

Melt the Butter

Cut 2 tablespoons from the stick of butter. Place in a small bowl in a microwave oven. Melt at 50% power so it doesn't splatter. Set it to microwave for about 30 seconds. If not completely melted, microwave it a little longer.

Brush Them

Brush each rolled biscuit with the melted butter.

Sprinkle With Sprinkles!

Sprinkle with each color of sprinkles in rainbow order, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, followed by a sprinkling of the cinnamon over all of the colors.

Now Roll Them

Using moistened finger tips, roll each sugar coated flattened biscuit from each side. They will meet in the center and stick together. Place on plastic wrap until ready to cut.

Preheat Oven

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Cut Them

Cut off a 12-inch piece of dental floss. Place the floss under the dough, positioning the dough to be cut into equal thirds. Pull the floss up over the dough, making a clean cut. Position the floss to make 2 more cuts. Repeat with the remaining 7 biscuit rolls, forming 24 pieces.

Onto the Baking Sheet

Place the silicone baking sheet onto the half sheet pan. Place each biscuit piece about an inch apart on the silicone baking sheet with the colors facing up. Using mostened fingertips, press gently over each bun, making them about 1/2-inch high.

Time to Bake!

Place the baking pan into the oven for 15 minutes, or until the buns are lightly browned. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan while making the icing.

Make Rainbow Icing

Place about 2 heaping tablespoons confectioners' sugar into each of 6 small bowls. Add 2 drops of each color to the bowls. I had red, blue, yellow and green food colors. For orange, use one drop of yellow and one drop of red. For the purple icing, use one drop of blue and one drop of red. Add about a teaspoon of water to each bowl. Stir to mix well, making sure there are no lumps of sugar. If the icing is too thin, add a little more confectioners' sugar. If it is too thick, add a little more water.

Ice Them

I decided to ice them in a circular fashion. Spoon the red icing onto the centers of each bun, followed by the orange, yellow, green, blue and purple icing.

Ready to Eat!

I think they came out very pretty and definitely remind me of rainbows! You can also see the colors on the inside when you cut the buns. My husband thought that they taste like the famous cinnamon rolls so I feel like my experiment was a success! I hope you try making these for your family. Since each bun is 1/3 of a biscuit, you don't have to feel guilty eating 3 of them! Yum!!!
