Quick and Easy Paper Flower Crown
This easily customizable flower crown is perfect for ringing in the Spring. It was inspired by a lovely crepe paper version I found here.
Supplies
You will need:
- Scrapbook paper in your choice of colors
- Thin malleable wire. Florist wire or craft wire works nicely.
- Wire cutters
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Paper washi tape
- Scissors
Prepare the Wires
Cut a length of wire long enough to fit around the head of the person who will be wearing the crown. I have a fairly big head and needed about 22in. Wrap the ends together tightly to make a circle. Don't worry if the wire seems thin or a little mishappen. This will be corrected later. Set aside.
Cut wires for the leaves and flowers. You can cut these about 2-3in long. No need to be especially precise. You will need quite a lot of these. I ended up having to cut more as I went.
Leaves
To cut the leaf shapes, fold your paper accordion-style to speed things up. Cut out a small leaf shape. You will need lots of these, so I recommend using up about two sheets of paper. The scrapbook paper I used for my leaves was two sided with slightly different colors on each side, and I really liked the dimension this added to the finished crown.
Hot glue each leaf to a wire stem and set aside. In the picture above, you can see I used a little too much glue. The glue will be visible in the final crown, so try to minimize its appearance.
Flower Centers
To make the flower centers cut a yellow piece of paper to about 1/2"x2 1/2". Roll it tightly and then release it. Add a drop of hot glue to hold it in a slightly relaxed position. Hot glue to a wire stem.
Finishing the Flowers
Cut a strip of paper to about 6"x1 1/2". Cut small strips into the paper about 2/3 of the way through.
Hot glue the flower center to one end of the paper. Roll the whole thing tightly and hot glue in place.
Gently bend back the petals until it opens as much as you like.
Start Building the Crown
Begin building the crown by wrapping the stem of a leaf or two around the wire crown. Then use a small (about 2") piece of washi tape to wrap around the wire. This will add thickness to the crown and prevent little wires from stabbing you as you wear it. Repeat this, adding 1-3 leaves and wrapping with tape.
Continue Wrapping the Crown
When you feel it is time, add flowers in the same way you added leaves. I like to add a couple extra leaves right around the flowers to help them blend in a bit better.
Continue working around. Since I only made 6 flowers, I tried to space them out evenly around the crown.
Finishing Up
Continue wrapping until you get back to the start. You will finish the same way you have done the rest, but you'll just have to be careful as you work around the first leaves you added.
And that's all there is to it. Enjoy!
