Quarto Game - Travel Version (made With Tinkercad)

In this Instructable I'll describe how to make a travel version of the game Quarto. It's lightweight and durable so you can throw in a carry-on bag or take backpacking.

The simplicity of the rules makes it easy to explain and play with new friends, but it's also a very engaging strategy game.

Quarto consists of a 4x4 grid and 16 pieces. All of the pieces are unique variations of 4 characteristics (color, shape, height, and hollow/solid). The goal of the game is to be the first person to complete a row of 4 that have at least one characteristic in common (all short/tall, all the same color, all the same shape, all hollow/solid). It's about as complicated as tic-tac-toe.

What makes the game unique is that neither player "owns" any of the pieces and you give the opponent the piece they play. It's probably easier to show you that tell you, so here a video...

• 3D printer and access to Tinkercad
• small magnet - 6-mm (diameter) 2-mm (thickness) ... something like these
• sandpaper
• small round file or drill bit (about 3-mm or 1/8" in diameter)

I printed mine in a bright color to make it easier to find in a backpack. It's also best if the box is a different color than either of the playing pieces in order to help them stand out.

1. Test to make sure the pin in fits the hinge before assembling. You may need to sand the pin or clean out the hole with the file or drill bit.
   
2. Put the box pieces together and push the pin through the hinge. Make sure the lid can open and close freely. Then use super glue to attach the cap to the hinge pin.
   

3. Put a small amount of superglue in the hole on each part of the box and press the magnet down into it. Make sure your magnets are opposite side up ... so they hold the lid closed instead of repelling the two sides!

You'll print these twice using a distinctly different color each time.

Here is the fully assembled game. You might need to sand some of the game pieces or use a small file or drill bit to clean out some of the holes.
