Quantum Tunneling DEMO - Part 6

20240619_094352.jpg

Welcome to the final part of the Quantum Tunneling project! In this guide, all previously built parts will be assembled together and turned into a DEMO for quantum tunneling.

This step all three of us (Larissa, Helen and Mark) did together.

Supplies

The following materials are required:

  • A red laser of class II
  • A holder for the laser
  • A battery and wires for the laser
  • A prism-wedge complex
  • A prism holder
  • A general assembly table
  • A screen to see the laser after quantum tunneling
  • 5 pins for the parts to be 'attached' on the table

NOTE: Please view our other instructables of parts 1-5 we made to size beforehand for this project.

Assembling Everything

In this part we'll start with the final bits and pieces.

You will need to get hold of a class II red laser and attach it accordingly with the holder (see instructable part 3).

Now determine where you'd like both this holder and the prism holder to be placed with the pins! You can see in the picture how we decided to place them. Please notice a 2x2 size is needed for the prism holder. Make sure the two holders both get pushed right onto the table on the pins to ensure proper assembling.

With the holders being placed, the prism-wedge complex can be placed in the prism holder.

Lastly, turn the screw of the laser holder to make it move horizontally over the length of the prisms. With this, you should be able to view the quantum tunneling effect!

You can move the screen around to view the light after having gone through the prisms!

Handy tip: Performing this DEMO in the dark gives the best results! If it isn't possible to be in a very dark room, we recommend making a black box.
