Pure Evoke Mio Radio Replace OLED Display
The Evoke Mio is a cuddly DAB radio bound in mock leather. PURE have a legacy of building DAB radios since the early 2000s.
My particular model was manufactured in Nov 2008.
OLED was chosen by PURE as a low energy display in favour of its eco credentials, however it was not evident at the time that these displays have a finite lifespan.
I am hoping this post will help others replace their OLED displays. Much of the inspiration came from Alan's web page- credit to him for making the post for others to follow.
Supplies
PH2,PH1 philips screwdrivers
Flat head screwdriver (small)
Replacement OLED display: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/2-36-inch-128x22-SSD1305-P21501_60762816844.html $7 plus shipping ($7 to UK/US)
Preparation
1. Charge up your battery so that you can test later
2. Disconnect the battery and the power
Opening It Up
It's not obvious how to open up the Mio, there are no externally visible screws. However, the age old trick of hiding the screws under rubber feet at the base has been used by PURE. First step is to use a flat head screwdriver to get 4 rubber feet off, then unscrew.
Carefully lifting the cover reveals a power cable to the battery terminal. This can be unscrewed to release the base.
There's some sound deadening fluff which should be removed.
Opening Up the Back
3 PH2 screws are holding the back panel- unscrew these but wait until the next step to take it off completely, as it is still attached by 4 cables
Detach the 4 Cables to Remove the Back
Carefully detach the 4 cables before lifting off the back panel
This will expose the front... which you should remove from the carcass by unscrewing 3 more screws
It should be possible to keep the aerial cable attached (it is soldered and glued) between the back and front.
Prepare to Lift the PCB
Detach the speaker cable
Unscrew four screws in the corners of the PCB
Remove the plastic knobs from the front panel, and unscrew the two nuts
Use a small flat screwdriver to open the tabs on both sides of the OLED display ribbon to free it up, then gently pull it out
Gently Prize Off the PCB
After the PCB is lifted, you will see the ribbon cable attached to the OLED component which sits underneath a fixing panel which is secured with two screws. After this panel is removed you should be able to replace it and test then re-assemble in reverse order!
