Do you want a plant that you can take wherever you want?

In this project I have listed the steps that I used for the preparation of my portable plant jar.

I have used some horticulture techniques in the making of this project. In this, project I have used the cutting technique. A plant cutting is a piece of a plant that is used in horticulture for vegetative (asexual) propagation. A piece of the stem or root of the source plant is placed in a suitable medium such as moist soil. If the conditions are suitable, the plant piece will begin to grow as a new plant independent of the parent, a process known as striking. A stem cutting produces new roots, and a root cutting produces new stems. Some plants can be grown from leaf pieces, called leaf cuttings, which produce both stems and roots.

For soil, I have used coir (the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut). Uses of brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture.

Supplies

  • Mason Jar
  • Shoot cut from a plant
  • Coir
  • Water
  • Knife and other tools

Removal of Coir From Coconut

As mentioned before I have used coconut coir as soil. The coir is removed from the outer hard shell of the coconut. It is a very easy job but requires a lot of hard work. For removal of coir from coconut, you need to make small cuts on the top of the coconut. For this, you need to place coconut vertically on the ground and make cuts in vertical direction. As the coir will start to detach from coconuts use your hands to pull out the coir carefully. Once all the coir is removed from the coconut, collect it and keep it in a container.

Cleaning the Jar

A clean jar will look much more presentable than an unclean one. Therefore, I would recommend you to clean your jar with soap and water. Cleaning your jar with water will be fine as well. We want our jar to be clean so that our plant looks good in the jar.

Putting It All Together

Once you have everything ready. It is the time to put it all together. Start by putting the coir into the jar. After filling the jar with the coir place the cut plant into it. Make sure to save some coir, as it will be used later for placing the plant properly. After adding the plant into the coir fill the jar with the remaining coir up to the brim.

Now add water to your plant. It will require quite an amount of water as coir soaks a lot of water. Hence, it is very good for gardening.

Your Plant Is Ready

Now that your plant is ready, water it daily and do keep it in the sun. Since, it is portable it will be very easy to relocate it whenever you want.

Enjoy your cute portable plant!
