Plastic Flute

Heres how to make a plastic flute using only scraps. It should only take about 15 minutes.

Supplies

  • 3/4" PVC pipe, about 16" (Scrap)

  • Scrap wood, 1" square trim (Scrap)

  • A few basic tools

Sand the Pipe

Start by sanding off the ugly letters. I used 150 grit sandpaper for this, but that's a bit coarse. You might want to go a bit finer, perhaps 220 grit. Beware the fumes! Do not use power tools for this!

Mark the Holes

Mark where the mouth and finger holes are going to be. My finger holes are about 1/2" apart. Just look at the picture.

Drill the Holes

Drill the where you marked them. Then, using a larger drill bit, bevel the edges of the holes, like a countersink.

Carve the Plug and Hammer It In

Carve a plug for the mouth end of the pipe. I used a coarse rasp. Then tap it into the end of the pipe.

Done!

Congratulations, you are done! I've done this with copper pipe too and it does look better that way.
