Photoshop Character Poster
Hi! This is a tutorial on how to make a cool looking character poster like the one above!
Supplies
Computer
Photopea
Patience
Select which character or actor you want to do a poster on. The in the google tab type in there name and search them. Next click on images, then settings, then advanced search. This should bring you to a new page.Scroll down ad select transparent on the color row. Scroll to the bottom and click advanced search.
Copy and Paste
Before we touch the images go to photopea and open up a document n the shape you want the poster to be in. Then find the paint bucket tool( right click on the gradient tool to find.),check at the bottom to make sure your color is set to black and click the background. Now that you have your images pulled up on google select one that you would like to be on your poster. Right click the image and copy/paste it onto the black background in photopea. If your image is being pasted in with a white background, you will have to do an extra step. Select the lasso tool on the left bar and right click it for options. Select polygonal lasso and trace the outside of your image with may clicks to make it look as real as you can. Then press the move tool at the top to have the area selected. Finally press ctrl i. to invert the selection to everything but what you picked and press backspace to delete. You can also download the pictures and click file, open, and then select the image you chose. Then you could cut it out and copy/paste onto the final product.(Example of this in the second photo)
Arrange
Repeat step 2 for all of the images you want to have in your poster. Once you have all of your images on the same page arrange them to look the way you want. Don't worry if the photos are cut out weird we will fix that in a few steps. On the bottom left you should see a bunch of layers. Use those to move photos to the front, back, or middle. Just be sure to keep the background on the bottom. After this select the top photo layer on the right column and right click it. A list of options should show up. Select merge down to make it be in the same layer as the photo below it. Repeat this until all of your photos are merged.
Hue/color
Now that you have all of your photos arranged. Go the lasso tool again and outline your characters with it. Once you have done this go to the top bar of the page and click on Layer, then go down to new adjustment layer, then click on hue/saturation. This should make a new layer pop up in your layer column as well as bring up a small page with adjustments you can make. Start adjusting by clicking the colorize button at the bottom. This makes all of the photos the same color and it will look nicer. Then adjust the lightness, hue, and color to fit your wants. My adjustments are shown in the photo above for reference. If you click off accidentally and it goes away, just click the layer again and then click "pro" by the history. Once your color is adjusted, it would be a good time to go fix those outer mistakes with the eraser tool. Just zoom in and make sure you have the right layer selected. If you mess up, press "ctrl z" and it will go back a step.
Glow
Go to the pen tool(NOT BRUSH TOOL) in the left column and select it. At the top of your screen change the fill to transparent and the stroke to white. Then use the tool to once again outline the group of characters in the center. Take your time here because this line will show in the final product. Then grab the brush tool from the side column and select it. Look toward the bottom and check to see if white is the color in front of the two squares at the bottom. If not press the arrows between the black and white to move it there. Then click on the white square and change it to the color you want it to glow. At the top of your screen change the brush size to 24 small mechanical and set the opacity to whatever you want. Then outline the characters following the white line you put in. When finished it should look something like the top photo
Background
Background is usually the first step but I prefer doing it last so I know what is will look like in the final result. Go onto google an search up backgrounds, or whatever you want to be behind your characters.Simply copy and paste the image onto the area and stretch it to cover your full picture. As you've noticed by now it is covering your characters, so now you have to go to your layer column in the lower right and move the image layer to the very bottom. If you don't want your background to have the same color as your hue layer. Right click the hue layer and click merge down to make it only apply to your characters layers.(Make sure you merge it onto the character layer and not something else.)
Text or Words
This step is entirely optional. If you want text n your poster all you have to do it click the text button in the left column and then click the area you want to add it in. Type your message in your choice of color. Then adjust the font to whatever you like! When you finish click the file button on the top left, go down to export as and select your method of saving! Enjoy your new poster!
