Paper Roll Holder
I recently made a home for my new Fuji Spray Turbine and I wanted to have a mixing station for my finishes so that everything could be contained in one area. To protect the top of the cabinet, I wanted to keep a roll of craft paper handy to attempt to keep the top of the cabinet in good shape. This easy design came in handy and can be used for paint areas, workbenches, in bakery areas to protect table tops and any other application where you want to use paper to protect a particular surface. Some basic materials and you can mount this holder wherever you like and can be easily customized to fit any sized paper roll you need!
Supplies
Materials Needed:
- Roll of Paper, the size of multiple components will be based on sizes of the actual roll itself.
- Wooden Dowel that fits inside the paper roll. In my case, it was 7/8"
- Drill bit that is the same diameter as the dowel
- Hardwood or plywood that are large enough to cover the size of the full roll of paper with a bit extra space.
- Kreg pocket hole jig of any kind ( i used the 520 pro) and pocket hole screws.
- Wood Glue.
Measure and Cut the Main Platform for the Paper Roll
Determine the diameter of the full paper roll. In my situation the whole roll was 2 3/4" wide so give yourself a bit more room, about double is a good rule of thumb, so i made the main platform 5"X5" square. Cut your piece out using whatever saw you have available. I used the table saw but a miter saw or even jigsaw can work for your process.
Find Center and Shape Main Platform
Find the center of your square piece and mark it clearly. Use a compass and from the center point, draw a radius that basically knocks off the square edges on one side of the square. Once that is clearly marked, you can drill a hole ( with the bit that is the same diameter as your wooden dowel ) about a 1/4" deep into your square, then head to the bandsaw to knock off the square edges by following the marks made with the compass earlier. You can fine tune the shape by sanding these edges until the desired shape is reached. Then test fit your dowel into the recessed holes. When you finish this step you should have what is pictured in the last photo.
Measure for the Access Slot and Cut
First make sure that you leave enough space at the rear (flat side) for the additional piece of wood that will be used to mount to the bench/wall. For mine, i was using 3/4" material so i first laid out this 3/4" because i knew that i would need at least that much clearance on the back. I then place the dowel in the center of the paper roll and rested it on the table to mark where the opening of the access slot would need to be. Once that was laid out i joined the edges of the drilled hole to the marks made with the dowel with a ruler and or bevel gauge. Then removed that material with a small trim router set to the depth of the previously drilled holes in the platform. I dialed in the fit with sandpaper until the fit was perfect.
Connect the Platform to the Mounting Bracket
Now use the Pocket Hole Jig to drill two pocket holes in an area where you will have clearance to attach the screws to the mounting platform. Then place the two pieces in the final "L" shape that they will be joined into in the final stage and mark the mounting bracket with the thickness of the platform. Then split the difference between that mark and the edge and layout the space for the countersunk holes that will be used to attach the brackets to the surface they will be mounted to. Once all the holes are drilled, add wood glue in the space that was previously laid out that denotes where the platform intersects with the mounting bracket. Cover that space in glue and drive home the pocket hole screws while maintaining a 90 degree joint between the platform and the mounting bracket. Allow the glue to fully cure before mounting, if you want to hurry along this process, you can use a bit of CA glue along with the wood glue to keep it moving.
Mount the Paper Holder
Use the Mounting holes that were drilled before attaching the two parts together to mount your new roll holder in the permanent location. Place the Paper in the holder with the dowel in the center. Now you have a great way to keep your paper in a convenient location so it is always there when you need it.
