Paper Necklace

When my aunt was in fourth grade she gave my mom a necklace similar to the one made here. The other day my mom saw it and thought it would be cool if her daughter made her a necklace similar to the one her sister made her.

This paper necklace is simple, although a little time consuming. If the right colors are chosen it will work with any outfit! Enjoy making and wearing your own jewelry.

Supplies and Materials:

• Scissors
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Calendar Image(s) (I used two to get contrast)
• Mod Podge
• Thread or String
• Paintbrush *optional*

Before you start cutting paper and applying Mod Podge you have to measure and cut the string. Measure out and cut about 3 1/2 to 4 feet of thread or string.

Then tie a knot or a loop at one end of the string.

Grab a calendar picture and find a spot with a variety of color. Then, using a ruler and a pencil, measure out 12 triangles. Each triangle should have a base of 1 1/2 inches and a length of 3 5/8 inches. Then cut each triangle out. I made 6 triangle on one picture and 6 on the other to get some contrast and variety.

Note:

Mark the center of the triangle base at 3/4 of an inch. Then draw a faint line up the length of the triangle. Where the two point cross is where the tip of the triangle will be.

Rolling the paper is pretty simple but it takes a few tries to get the hang of it. The steps are outlines below.

1. Place the triangle picture side down anywhere under your string with the base directly under it.
2. Roll the paper starting from the base, enclosing the string inside. Roll it as tight as you can.
3. Add a small bit of Mod Podge on the paper "bead". Using your fingers or paintbrush move the sealant around until it completely covers the "bead"
4. Next to the "bead" tie a knot. It does not have to be huge, but it has to be big enough that the "bead" doesn't easily slip over it.

Repeat these four steps with all the triangles until you are done.

With the "beads" made and on the necklace you are almost done! You should have quite a bit of extra string to have the necklace large enough to slip around your neck. However, the two sides aren't connected yet, so you will need to use one end to tie a knot around the other. This should make a circle and complete the necklace.
