One Hour Zippered Skirt
Here's a fun skirt you can whip up in a hour - all you need is about a 1/2 yard of fleece, 1, 2, 3 or 4 zippers, and a sewing machine. Wearing black leggings underneath adds extra style, plus gives more flexibility with how much you want to open up the zippers.
Since you only have an hour, let's get started!
Supplies
- 5/8 yard of fleece, specifically, 22" x 60"(if only a yard, then skirt will be shorter)
- quilting pins
- scissors
- 14 - 18" separating zipper, at least one, the rest don't necessarily have to be
- Topstitching weight thread
- sewing machine fitted with jeans needle
- measuring tape, or yardstick, chalk
Skirt Sections
1. A width of fleece fabric is generally 58-60". Folding over a 5/8 yard should give you a rectangle ~ 18" x 27" usable material(1.5" of each selvage usually isn't).
You want to cut 4 sections, each with a straight edge for the front and back edges, and a slanted edge for the sides.
2. Using a measuring tape as a straight edge, draw a diagonal line down the fleece, making sure each flipped image has the same measurements for fronts and bottoms.
3. Cut along chalked line.
Sew on Zippers
1. With right sides of fabric up, and straight edges(not diagonal) touching, start with the front zipper.
Starting 1" below top of waist fabric edge, lay zipper on top of seam, centered, and pin zipper to fleece. The zipper beginning goes at the top of the skirt.
2. Now do the same thing to the sides, meeting the diagonal edges.
3. The diagonal edges are about 1.5" longer, so after pinning the zipper to the fleece, determine where the new bottom should be. Chalk a transition line to middle, and cut.
4. If you are doing 4 zippers, separate the last one to pin and sew on. It's a lot easier that way.
Waistband
1. With the leftover 4" strip, you'll create the waistband.
Right sides together, lay the strip along skirt edge, 1" below skirt edge, folding back 2" where they meet.
Pin and sew seam, hand feeding needle when you get to zipper hardware, so as to not damage anything.
2. Fold edge over, creating band, and pin liberally. You want to capture the seam allowances within the waistband.
3. Sew through all thicknesses, stitching in the ditch. Hand-feed the wheel when going/skipping over zipper hardware.
A Unique Skirt!
Using leftover fleece, and some contrasting zippers, the skirt is easy to make, super comfy and fun to wear.
Happy sewing!
