Nutsert FROM Pop Rivet
Supplies Needed!
5/32 ---3/16----1/4 x Inch Pop Rivet Also needed a Machine Screw Size Tap ( #4-40, 6-32, 10-32 ) Depending on Size of Rivet. Also 2 Tap and die handles, One to hold tap and Another to hold Pop Rivet. (Vise Grip Substitute for Tap Holder). Always use Tap Holder to hold Rivet to keep it from becoming distorted.
Insert an unused Pop Rivet into a hole large enough so after tapping out the center pin it can easily be removed to do the next step
Using a hammer to tap out the center pin of the Rivet. Save both parts as the pin will be reinserted after several steps.
Using a Tap and tap holder (Vice Grip Substitute) to hold the tap. and Another Tap Holder to grip the Pop Rivet, Be sure to Hold the Rivet with a (Tap Holder) to keep it from being badly distorted out of round. Carefully Thread the rivet giving the holder a tight grip to keep it from spinning too much.
My choice was to use a #6-32 tap on a 3/16 inch Pop Rivet. (I have not tried it but a 5/32 inch pop rivet should allow a #4-40 screw and a 1/4 inch Pop Rivet a #8 or #10 Machine Screw........ I Inserted the pop rivet into sheet metal as a electrical ground terminal on my car!
Reinsert the center pin back into the pop rivet. Then using a drill as normal drill the hole for the rivet make sure the hole is not too large a snug fit is required, then using a pop rivet gun insert the pop rivet and Squeeze the handle slowly giving the rivet time to expand without prematurely breaking the pin.
Using a hammer and the broke off Center Pin removed from the Pop Rivet Gun Handle, Gently tap out the broke off part of the pin left in the rear side of the rivet.
Run the tap into the installed Pop Rivet to re-expand the threaded opening to its original size do this slow to keep the rivet from loosing up. Remove the tap and now you are ready to use your new nut-sert at a fraction of the cost of Nutserts and No special tool to buy! One More Step
Insert the Machine screw of choice into the Pop Rivet and AVOID over
tightening so you will not spin out the rivet in the hole making it loose.
