Nerf Modulus Modification Guide for Beginners

The Nerf Modulus was released in 2014 as a beginning to the Modulus customizable blaster line. While it is a interesting blaster, it has a number of flaws common to electronic Nerf blasters, including inability to dry-fire and an inability to fire without the jam door completely closed.

These problems can be fixed with a number of simple modifications*, which we (a Nerf war team) will show you in this guide. These mods include:

• Blaster disassembly.
• Trigger lock removal.
• Magazine switch disabling.
• Jam door switch disabling.
• Blaster reassembly.
• A few extra tips and tricks.
  

This project is for beginners, and while it involves an electronic Nerf blaster, there are no electrical skills, tools, or knowledge necessary to complete this project. We have found workarounds for you. When you learn more about electrical work, feel free to go back into your blaster and do things such as complete rewires, motor replacements, resistor and thermistor removal, and more.

To modify your Nerf Modulus, you will need:

• A hot glue dispenser.
• Hot glue.
• Scissors.
• A small Philips-head screwdriver.
• A small piece of cardboard.
• The blaster itself.

In order to get to the mechanical parts of the blaster, we will first need to open up ("butterfly") both halves of the shell. Here's how:

1. Remove any stock, tactical rail, and barrel attachments from the core blaster.
2. Flip the blaster over so that its left side (the side with all screws) is facing upwards, as in picture one.
3. Remove the screw in the battery compartment cover, as in picture one. Remove the piece by pulling it downwards at an angle off of the blaster. Remove any batteries.
4. Remove the two screws in the stock attachment point and pull it backwards off of the blaster, as in picture two.
5. Remove all other screws in the blaster shell as in picture three.
6. Carefully pry both halves of the blaster apart as in picture four.

Before beginning any modifications, it is critically important to familiarize yourself with the internal mechanism of the blaster. Three reference photos have been provided.

In order to customize the performance of the blaster, we will need to get to, remove, and/or disable a number of locks and switches. Here is how to get to them:

1. Locate the large plastic plate underneath the trigger arm, undo the two screws holding it in place, and pull it out of position, as in pictures one and two. The trigger lock and magazine switch will now be exposed.
2. Locate the small plastic cover near the top of the blaster, remove its screw, and pull it out of position, as in pictures three and four. The jam door switch will now be exposed.

The trigger lock does not allow the trigger to be pulled on the blaster unless a magazine is inserted completely. To remove it:

1. Locate the trigger lock, and remove the larger piece as shown in pictures one and two.
2. Pull both the acceleration trigger and the main trigger to expose the remaining portion of the trigger lock, as in pictures three and four.
3. Remove the final piece, as in pictures five and six.

The magazine switch does not allow any electricity to flow through the blaster unless a magazine is inserted. To disable it:

1. Cut a small (approximately 1cm X 0.5cm) rectangle of cardboard, as in picture one.
2. Add a dot of hot glue to one side, as in picture two.
3. Glue it over the magazine switch, making sure the switch is completely depressed, as in picture three.

The jam door switch does not allow any electricity to flow through the blaster unless the jam door is completely closed. To disable it:

1. Temporarily remove the jam door, as in picture two.
2. Carefully pry out the jam door switch, as in picture three.
3. Cut another small (approximately 0.25cm X 0.5cm) rectangle of cardboard, as in picture four.
4. Glue the rectangle of cardboard into the bottom of the box housing the jam door switch, as in picture five.
5. Replace the jam door switch, as in picture six.
6. Replace the jam door, as in picture seven.

At this point, all internal modifications to the blaster are complete. To reassemble your blaster:

1. Check to make sure you have done all modifications correctly and removed the correct pieces, as in pictures one and two.
2. Put both halves of the blaster back together, and tighten all screws, as in picture three.
3. Replace the stock attachment point, and tighten its screws, as in picture four.
4. Add batteries, as in picture five.
5. Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten its screw, as in picture six.

If you have made it this far, congratulations! You have successfully modified your Nerf Modulus! You will now be able to enjoy being able pull the trigger and rev the blaster whenever you wish!
