Modify Nerf Mega Rotofury to Shoot Elite Darts
This will show you how to quickly, easily and cheaply modify the Nerf Mega RotoFury to shoot elite darts. This is a very easy mod job, it does not require you to open up the blaster and is completely reversible. This will take about 30 minutes and only costs a few dollars.
What You Will Need:
- 1/2" CPVC pipe (3ft)
- electrical tape (a lot, the best part of a roll)
- Nerf Mega RotoFury
- ruler or other measuring device
- PVC cutters or saw
- (optional) Drill with 1/2" spade bit ( you may not need this, depending on how tightly your darts fit
Cut the PVC Barrels.
Start by cutting your cpvc into 10 pieces, each 3 inches long (in the images i posted, they are 3.5" long, but i've since trimmed them back to 3" to allow for a little more clearance for the dart tips). They will work at 3.5", but you have to push the darts completely into the barrel to keep the tips from hitting the shell of the blaster. By cutting them at 3", you don't have this problem.
Once you have all 10 barrels cut, check the fit of your darts. pvc can vary greatly from piece to piece. If the fit is too tight, use a 1/2" spade bit in your drill to ream out the pipe.
You will also want to take a knife around the end of the pipe to create a slight bevel on the end. This will make it much easier to load the darts.
Wrap the Barrels in Tape
You will need to wrap the barrels with electrical tape in order to make them fit snugly into the cylinder in the rotofury. The cylinder chamber is tapered at the back, so you won't need as much tape on that end. I found that it took about 8 wraps to make it fit snug, but this could vary based on your pipe and the thickness of tape you are using. Start with 8 wraps, press the pipe into the cylinder and then adjust as needed. you want it to be very snug so you can just barely push it in.
You will then need to pull it back out and wrap the front end of the barrels so that they sit straight. You want the front edge of the tape to be at 2.5" from the back. This will make it so that it does not stick out of the cylinder. In the image, you can see that mine is at 2.75 inches. this works fine, but it is visible when the barrels are installed. This took about 11.5 wraps of tape to fit tightly.
Install Your Barrels.
Press your taped up barrels into the cylinder of the RotoFury. Load it up with elite darts and you are ready to go. As you can see, there are no permanent modifications made to the blaster. If you want to go back to shooting Mega darts, simply grab the cpvc barrels with a pair of pliers and pull them out.
WARNING: When the PVC barrels are installed, the air restrictors will be disabled. This means that you should not dry fire your blaster. Also, be careful with this unit, due to the size of the plunger system designed to shoot Mega darts, this thing is incredibly powerful with elite darts. It will shoot in the 95 to 100 fps range, which is much higher than the 70fps of most elite guns.
Optional: Paint.
I ended up painting my barrels to make them look a little nicer. I used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric dye, charcoal gray. Because it is a dye, it doesn't build up on the surface of the pipe, which makes it ideal for this type of project. The color matches pretty well with the mega color scheme. I wasn't going to bother painting them, but i pulled the barrels out to shorten them to 3" and to move the front tape back to 2.5" so it didn't stick out. i figured, while it was out, i should just go ahead and paint them. I'm very happy I did.
