Mobilaty Aid (Leg Strap)

IMG_4982.jpg

These are mobility aids that are intended for those who are wheelchair users. My grandma came up with them and I decided that I wanted to make them for my senior project and create a tutorial on making them in hopes that more people could use them.

(this is a part of my senior project)

Pattern/prep

Measure around your leg above the knee and add about 4 ½ inches to get the length of the strap. The width should be about 1 inch, double that and add about a ½ inch for seam allowance. Use the pattern to cut out your fabric and iron it. The velcro should be about 4 inches long and the handle should be about 12.

Making the Strap

Fold the fabric in half with the nice side in and iron it. Sew it closed along the outside edge. Sew one of the ends closed and then flip the tube right side out.

Adding the Buckle

Fold the open side of the fabric tube, iron it, then fold it around the buckle and sew it down.

Adding the Handle and Velcro

sew the soft side of the velcro onto the end without the buckle. Leave about an inch of space so it's adjustable. Sew on one end of the webbing (handle) on the same side as the velcro leave another inch and sew down the other end. After that, you can put the rough side of the velcro over where the handle is sewn on.

Finishing Touches

Cut off the loose threads and then use a lighter to burn the ends down.
