Milk Pouring Device

The image above is the machine you will be making by following this Instructable. This device is targeted towards people with arthritis, in order for them to poor milk with more success and ease. The pulley, which is able to change the direction of force applied is used in order to reduce the strength required. People with arthritis commonly experience aching around their hands and arms while trying to grab onto things or applying any weight onto their hands/arms.

Here are the measurements, instructions and a "how to use the machine" guide:

Gathering Your Pieces

This machine will be made entirely up of 6mm MDF wood and 10mm plywood. (You will need a fairly large amount of each type.) The measurements are written in the diagram(PDF) attached above; the diagram is not to scale so please do not print them out and expect them to be the right size. Please make sure the measurements of your pieces are very accurate as, without perfect accuracy, it can affect how the pieces connect together.

In addition, this machine uses 2 skate-board bearings; 2cm diameter, 3 pulleys; 4cm diameter, wood glue(PVA glue), hot glue gun, all-purpose glue, approximately 50cm of string in total, 20cm thread, and 2 nails, each 3cm length and 0.5cm diameter.

Some tools you will need are a nail gun (unless you use multiple clamps), a hand saw, or anything you will use to cut the wooden boards, a sander (to make sure your machines are the exact length), a screw drill, or screwdriver, ruler, and pencil.

Assembling Box A

There is an image direction and a writing direction for this step. Please view both of them in order to make sure you are proceeding with the steps correctly.

You will need all the pieces labeled "Box A" and the counterweight ready for the following steps. You can draw out the measurements onto your wooden board then cut them out using what-ever device to desire. When cutting the pieces out, you should write the name of the piece as it will be useful and easier to work with later on. Adding on, please do not sand and/or polish the edges as it can slow down the gluing process and could sand the pieces smaller.

*All glue used in the following steps is wood glue(PVA glue).*

Assembling box A)

Step 1: Lable the "base of box A" with 'T' for the top, 'R' for the right, 'L' for the left, and 'B' for the bottom.

Step 2: Apply some glue onto the edges of the 'R' side of "base of box A".

Step 3: Attach one of the "side of box A" pieces onto the glue, making sure the longer side is facing the top. *The pieces should perfectly align as they are both 10cm.* *When proceeding with the gluing step please proceed as quickly as possible as PVA glue does not dry instantly and you need to clamp the pieces together.*

Step 4: Apply glue to the edge of the 'L' side of "base of box A". *This should be across the pervious place we glued on the "side of box A".

Step 5: Attach the second "side of the box A" piece onto the glue. *Make sure the pieces are facing the same way; the long side facing the top.*

Step 6: Apply glue onto the edge of 'T' of the "base of box A" and apply glue onto the long side of both the "side of box A".

Step 7: Attach the "Back of box A" piece to where the glue is placed. (There should be a 0.6mm gap on the top.)

Step 8: Apply glue onto the 'B' side of "base of box A" and apply glue onto the shorter side of "side of box A".

Step 9: Attach the "front of the box" piece to where the glue is.

Step 10: Apply glue onto the top of "back of box A" and the top of both the "side of box A".

Step 11: Attach the "top of box A" piece onto the glue.

Step 12: Use a nail gun to secure the wood pieces. Place 2-3 nails per side.

- If you are not using a nail gun, you need to use several clamps to hold the pieces together and

hold it down then leave it there for 24 hours.

Step 13: Glue on *OR* screw on the "counterweight". This should be attached on in the exact middle of the "base of box A"; 4.5cm from the right/left and 0.5cm from the bottom/top. Make sure the piece is facing the correct way (which you can check from the image directions).

When you have completed all the steps above, your box pieces should be assembled like the picture under the sub-heading.

Assembling Box B

Once again, there is an image direction and a writing direction for this step. Please view both of them in order to make sure you are proceeding with the steps correctly.

You will need all the pieces labeled "XXXX of box B" for the following steps.

*All glue used in the following steps is wood glue(PVA glue).*

Assembling box B)

Step 14: Label the widths of "base of Box B" with 'T' for top and 'B' for the bottom.

Step 15: Apply glue onto the edge of the 'T' side of "Base of box B".

Step 16: Attach the "side of box B(with hole)" to the glue, making sure the hole is facing up.

Step 17: Apply glue onto the edge of the 'B' side of "Base of Box B".

Step 18: Attach the "side of box B" to where the glue is.

Step 19: Apply glue onto the top edges of "side of box B" and "side of box B(with hole)".

Step 20: Attach the "Top of box B" piece onto the glue, making sure the hole on this piece alines with the hole in the side piece.

Step 21: Clamp the pieces together or use a nail gun and nail the pieces together. (If you clamp it, you will need to wait around 24 hours before you can fiddle with it.)

Once again, make sure your final product looks like the image under the sub-heading.

Assembling "The Rest"

In the following steps, you will need the rest of the wooden pieces, 2 nails, 3 pulleys, string around 50cm, thread around 20cm, a hot glue gun, and 2 skateboard bearings. Adding on, there are some photos of some confusing parts explained in the steps below.

*All glue used in the following steps is wood glue(PVA glue).*

Step 22: Apply glue onto one side of "wheel B".

Step 33: Attach one of the "wheel A" piece onto where the glue is, making sure "wheel B" goes in the middle.

Step 34: Apply glue onto the other side of "wheel B".

Step 35: Attach the other "wheel A" piece onto where the glue is, once again making sure "wheel B" is in the middle.

Step 36: Clamp the wheel together for 24 hours. *You can proceed to step 40 while you wait for the wheel to glue together*

Step 37: Drill a 1cm diameter hole into the bottom of "wheel B" going through both "wheel A" parts as well.

Step 38: Apply glue onto the drilled hole and stick the "wooden rod".

Step 39: Clamp the wooden rod and wheel together for 24 hours.

Step 40: Attach the skateboard bearing onto the pulley (this should fit perfectly if you have the right size pulley)

Step 41: Repeat the previous step. (Now you should have 2 of the pulley and bearing.)

Step 42: Stick a nail through one of the pulleys THEN the skateboard bearing, so that the bearing is under.

Step 43: Place the nail onto the middle of the "pulley stand" under the top by 2cm.

Step 44: Drill the nail in, while holding the bearing and pulley still. *Make sure you don't drill the nail in too much, make it so that the nail is barely longer than the pulley and bearing combined.

Step 45: Screw a stopper from the other side and glue it in place using all-purpose glue.

Step 46: Glue the "pulley stand" onto the top of "top of box A", making sure the pulley alines with the hole and that there is a 1cm gap between the hole and the stand.

Step 47: Clamp it together and leave it for 24 hours. *You can proceed to the next step while you wait for it to glue together*

Step 48: Take the other "pulley stand" and cut it into an angle (around 45˚). *We will name this cut piece "Pulley stand cut".*

Step 49: Glue the other pulley and bearing onto the middle of the wheel.

Step 50: Place a nail through the pulley, then the bearing, then drill it into the middle of the wheel, and then through "pulley stand cut".

Step 51: Glue the "pulley stand cut" onto the "side of box B" and make sure the pulley alines with the pulley on the "pulley stand".

Step 52: Clamp the pieces together and wait 24 hours. *You cannot proceed to the next step while waiting so please steadily wait 24 hours".

Step 53: Place a thread through the hole in the "counterweight".

Step 54: Tie the string around the bottom of the "pulley stand" and glue it onto the part 0.5cm above the "top of box B".

Step 55: Place the end of the string onto the top of Box A using hot glue. *Glue to the left of the "top of box A piece).

Step 56: Place the string through the pulley on the pulley stand, and then into the wheel. *If there is any excess string, you can cut it off.

Now you are done creating your product!!

How to Work Your Machine

To work the machine, first, you will need to place your milk carton into Box A. The milk carton should fit perfectly if you were able to cut the wood boards perfectly. You will have to spin the wheel forwards and backward depending on the angle at which the box is. (There is a video attached below if you would like to see the machine in action.)

This machine does work, (as you can see in the video) you can spin the wheel and adjust the length of the string to tilt the milk carton. Although you will need to move your cup around and "catch" the milk.
