Manufacturing Lens Cap
This is documenting the process of design and manufacture a lens cap with Fusion 360
Model Design (1/2) the Shape of the Cap
By extruding the outer circle (45mm) up and extruding the inner circle (42mm) down, I got the the basic shape of the lens cap.
I also use fillet tool to create several rounded rim on the lens cap.
Model Design (2/2) Add Logo Engrave
I tried to sketch out the logo manually but I found I can use SVG file instead.
The SVG file by default is very large, and I used the scaling tool to make it the right size.
(Be careful, you need to specify which plane to place the SVG file here. It is difficult to change later)
I also use the position offset to place it in the center of the lens cap's bottom surface.
Applying a 2mm extrusion, I made an engrave on my model.
Manufacturing (1/3) Milling First Surfaces and the Pocket
1. Use face tool to create a flat surface
2. Use 2D contour tool to make the rounded rim of the cap
3. Use adaptive removal tool to remove the inside of the lens cap
Manufacturing (2/3) Milling the Other Surfaces and the Engrave
Create a new setup with a flipped z axis.
1. Face tool to create a flat surface
2. Contour tool to cut the left over material along the outer rim of the cap
3. Engraving
The engraving is tricky for:
1. The path is difficult to choose. I tried with several ways of using it and it eventually worked.
2. The built-in tools is not small enough to engrave this level of detail. I customized the engrave tool with different parameters.
Manufacturing (3/3) Turning on the Side
Make another setup for the turning tools.
The turning process was done in both direction, from engraved side to the other side, and in reverse.
The turning tools created the rounded filleted surface along the lens cap rim.
