Making a Yarn Wig; Tips, Tricks, and Styling
Did you spend all your money on Comicon tickets? Do you need a wig without breaking the bank? Maybe you want to cosplay as your original character?
Whatever the reason, have I got the tutorial for you!
Before you start, here's some tips that may help you along the way...
- Find out if your adhesive spray dries clear, if not you'll need to be extra careful to not spray the top of the yarn.
- Its okay if you don't cut enough yarn to start. Its better to cut to little than too much.
- Remember that the more yarn you add, the puffier your wig will be. (I started at the very bottom for maximum puff)
Supplies
Required
- 3 or more skeins of yarn (Any color or size works, you can even dye your yarn if you wish!)
- Scissors
- School Glue
- Wig net
- Mannequin Head
- Scotch Tape
- A Cardboard Box and some packaging or duct tape
Optional
- Adhesive spray
- Crochet hook (Size depends on your yarn)
- Ribbons (You can add them in along with your yarn if you'd like.)
Assemble Your Yarn Measuring Tool
Cut cardboard strips from a box and tape them together the length you want your hair strands to be. You don't want your cardboard to bend or your strands will be uneven. I recommend making your cardboard strip about 2 inches longer than you think you'll need.
Cutting Your Yarn
Wrap your yarn around your cardboard 40-50 times before cutting your yarn off the cardboard. Keep your cardboard nearby if you need to cut more yarn.
Making the Yarn Weft
Tape a foot of yarn across your workspace and tie your yarn to the string until you have about six inches of yarn. I like to double up strands to make it less uniform.
How to Connect the Strands and Wefts
Using knots, attach your wefts around the entirety of the wig cap. This includes the face.
Adding Accent Color
Knot 2-3 strands at once above your initial wefts, this helps adds depth and color to your wig as well as cover up bald spots.
Add More Wefts to the Back of the Head
The amount of wefts towards the back will add volume depending on how many you add. I just added One
Adding the Middle Hair
Add on several more wefts in a ring like fashion, fasting them with several knots.
Adding the Top Hair
You may notice the front being bare like mine, you can add wefts to that bare part if you'd like and cut those into bangs.
Styling
I used a plastic glove and applied Elmer's glue to the layers of hair one by one like styling gel.
Secure the Hair
This isn't necessary but adhesive spray can work like hair spray to help the wig hold its shape. (Be weary of not letting your spray be visible!)
Covering Up the Bald Spots
You'll most likely find "bald spots" as you glue and spray the hair back, to fix this you can make smaller wefts and tie them where necessary. This is also where I glue the top layer back.
Trim
Go ahead and give your wig a trim, using small cuts and slowly work your way up the wig carefully.
Drying the Wig
Most likely the wig will still be wet so set your wig face up outside (or anywhere else its not too humid) for about 5-6 hours.
