Making a Tribal Mask

mask1.jpeg

I made a mask inspired by nature and tribal culture.

Supplies

Paper clay, a couple of clay tools, white primer and paint.

Making the Paper Mound

mask12.jpeg
  1. I first took an old newspaper and crumpled it well into a spherical sort of shape.
  2. I then shaped it such that it was spherical on the top and flat at the bottom and placed it on the table
  3. To fix it there I took two long piecs of masking tape and used it to keep the paper mound on the table as shown

Applying the Clay

  1. I took the ball of paper clay I had and kneaded it.
  2. Then I took part of the clay out, set it aside, and pressed the remaining part so that it became flat and then placed it over the paper mound, so as to acquire the mound's shape

Making the Nose of the Mask

  1. I then used the remaining clay to make the nose and ears of the mask, and attached them using water
  2. Considering that the ears would become big and out of proportion, I later removed them

Making the Eyes

  1. Using the pointy back end of a clay tool, I removed the parts of the eyes and smoothened it down using water

Applying White Primer

  1. I applied a layer of white primer to the mask as the preliminary step before painting it
  2. I let it dry for 10 minutes

Initial Paint Layer

  1. I applied an initial layer of yellow paint with red stripes onto the mask

Black Head Stripes and Lips

  1. I added another layer of yellow paint and also added a black head stripe line
  2. At the bottom of the mask I also added a line of red paint to resemble lips

Final Finish

  1. I painted the nose golden and added final touches to finish my tribal mask
