Lego Car Mounts

This project is a fix to my extremely cluttered desk with all of my Lego cars. I took inspiration from many other Lego wall mounts and used my own twist to make them original and creative. I wanted to choose a rather simple design and try not to overcomplicate the project.

Supplies

The main supplies I used were a tile of wood larger than 13*25 cm and a laser cutter. The wood I used was around 5mm thick. This wood was a little hard for the laser cutter so if necessary run the laser cutter multiple times. You will also need access to SolidWorks or a good CAD software.

Starting in SolidWorks

In solid works or any CAD software make a 25cm by 13cm rectangle with rounded or straight corners. I used rounded corners with a radius of 3cm. Remember to add your kerf when necessary; Kerf is the amount of material removed when laser cutting.

Make a hole in the center of the sketch the size of a 2*4 Lego piece. This is about 1.6 * 3.2 cm, when you make this whole subtract the kerf from each length. This is where we will later put our attaching or support piece for our car.

If you want to add holes for nails instead of using command strip the is possible. Just find the right dimensions and subtract for kerf.

I also added the car brand name at the bottom of the sketch. This is as simple of adding a center line and using the text tool found in the sketch tab.

You can customize this to font, size, name, etc.

Drawing Blueprint

Once you finish your sketch you add the sketch to a new drawing. For the drawing make the ratio 1:1. Then use custom dimensions to the length and width of your length of the laser cutter. For example mine is 12*18, once you do this save it as a PDF and add it to a flash drive to import to the laser cutter.

*To make a new drawing it is a whole separate file*

Laser Cutting and Assembely

This is the final step to this project, It is very simple. The first part will be to add a 2*4 tile piece to the center. You may have to fight with it a little and find the correct angle but if you subtracted the kerf correctly there shouldn't be an issue. There is no need for glue or any adhesive. Once finished with this ad a regular 2*4 on top of the tile piece, after you place the car on top and adjust the car as needed.
