Learning Craft and Technology Through Costuming

Whenever I show someone a costume I've made the first response is always "That's awesome! Where did you buy that?" I tell them "I didn't buy it – I made it myself." "You made that? Oh, I could never do that."

And I say “Sure you can- you just don't know it yet.”

It's my belief that costuming and prop building is a fantastic vehicle for learning an enormous variety of skills and technologies and I want to create a company to provide a gateway to that by offering replica prop and costume parts kits, electronics kits and mechanical components -as well as providing tutorials covering topics like molding and casting, fabrication, animatronics and electronics. So when you buy one of my kits, it's more than a box of parts- it's a springboard to something much greater.

I enjoy getting people excited about learning new technology and hands on craft skills that expand their skill set. Maybe the person that buys my animatronic controller kit develops an interest in electronics or robotics and then uses a casting tutorial I've written to make robot parts or a case for their electronics project. I'm always excited to see people take something I've done and then make it their own by taking it in an entirely new direction.

Costuming and prop building involves a lot of problem solving and it requires both knowledge and skill. Knowledge and skill equals independence and there is no greater feeling of independence than having the skill set to create what you envision in your mind.

I would use the prize funds to purchase equipment and supplies to begin creating small production runs of prop kits, electronics kits and create new even better tutorials as well as set up a website for kit sales and support.
