LED Spiral Tree
I love all kinds of LED strips. I made a nice rainbow light with them. Even the non addressable ones are useful. I've made a bright market umbrella outdoor light by attaching them to the unbrella ribs so when my spiral tree blew out I decided to wrap a length of led strip around it.
Controller
I decided to use non-addressable RGB leds. This means I can have a programmed effect but all leds change color simultaneously. This also means a controller will be needed. I could have used an arduino uno and did to make the initial tests using an RGB shield but ended up using a custom single board with a bare Atmega328 chip. Just had to switch the target programmer and program the chip directly.
I had plenty of these boards left over from other lamp projects. Feel free to use a cheapie inline preprogrammed controller like I did on my umbrella instead.
I ended up using a slow crossfade demo as the base for the tree.

Wrapping the Tree
I used waterproof strips since these will be outdoors. They did stick on their own but I quickly followed up with wire ties to make sure they stay put. Simple and easy hack. The feedthrough power ability of the strip made it easy to feed the power supply into the bottom and get power out the top to the star.
Dont Forget the Star on Top
For the star I used a pair of 10W chips to get some attention. I soldered them to a copper sheet as a heatsink. I could have used more strip since there was a little left over.
Trying It Out
First try had the speed way too fast....
Once I calmed it down it looked pretty good.
