Jumbo Jar Oil Lamp

After I made my original Primitive Jar Oil Lamp, I felt the need for a brighter lamp, so I designed one with 3 wicks. This is the exact same as the original, but I used an empty salsa jar and three wicks.

Supplies

The materials and tools I used can easily be substituted.

  1. Vegatable Oil
  2. Essential Oils (Optional)
  3. Lighter
  4. Glass Salsa Jar
  5. Cotton Wicks (x3)
  6. Sharp Object

Piercing the Holes for the Wicks

Take the lid of the jar and poke three holes equidistant to each other. You can use any sharp object avaiable as long as the hole is the right size.

Adding the Wicks

Take your wicks and saturate them in the oil. Then use a toothpick to push them through the hole. Once you push it through the hole, pull it from the other side until there is only a small part of the wick at the top.

Adding the Oil

Fill up the jar with any liquid vegetable oil available. Add a bit of essential oils for scent if you'd like. Cleaner oils create a cleaner flame. You can also use grease, but this will make a dirty and smelly flame.

Using the Lamp

To use the lamp, make sure that all three wicks are saturated. Only a small portion of the wick should be at the top. Otherwise, the flame will be out of control and create black smoke. Now the lamp is ready to use. To light the lamp, instead of fiddling around with the lighter, you can get a 4th wick and light that first and use it to light the other three. Your Jumbo Jar Oil Lamp is complete. Light it up and watch as it illuminates your room with the unforgettable, ancient glow.
