Tile Layout and Attachment

This wall display is made form mirror appliques I ordered from Amazon. I arranged them in the layout configuration used with the James Webb telescope put into operation in 2022.

As links may change over time you may need to search for something equivalent if the link is broken.

I needed 19 hexagons to complete this project. (18 if you do not use the center applique). Eighteen for the gold mirror plus one in the center with the information (the center is optional - one could leave it blank or blacked out.

The mirror segments are just 1mm thick made from a plastic material with a gold mirror finish. They are shipped with a film scratch coating that should be removed only after mounting. I have not tested the scratch resistance but assume their are probable.

I applied these mirrors with 3M Command Strips (poster strips) using 2 per segment (38 total). I preferred using Command Strips in case I needed to later unmount them and prevent wall damage. Sometimes unknown double-sided foam tape strips loosen or damage the wall upon removal.

Lay a base line for level application of the first mirror applique.

You can then continue mounting consecutive mirrors making sure they line up with each ones edges and corners.

Center Hexagon

I made mine without a center originally. It appeared awkward on a white wall. A black center would look better.

Better yet I added information about the JWST as a plaque explaining the decoration.

I added the center hexagon to place an information plaque - the center fitted perfectly as the last applique.

Before placement I printed the supplied PDF which has been sized for this particular hexagon (each side is 100 mm in length - matching the supplied mirror tiles supplied).

I printed this on a color inkjet then cut along the edges.

I used spray adhesive on the gold side of the mirror applique with its scratch protector still on and placed my cutout on top before mounting the applique using the same 3M Command Strips.

Critique

My walls have texture which shows a bit of misalignment with each mirror that's visible in the images. This was not a big deal as most patients walking by don't stop to read or inspect but it can be easily seen from my waiting room.

If you want perfect alignment you would probably need a very flat surface such as finished plywood or metal to offer a flatter base.
